putting my feet up
It's finished, I love it and I'm going to enjoy hand sewing and quilting even more with my feet up on my new footstool. It was made using a brilliant pattern called Remixed Ottoman by Penny Jameson. I just had to make this after seeing the beautiful one Adrianne made when she took a class at Stitch Playroom in Christchurch, New Zealand. She very kindly put me in touch with them (thanks again Adrianne!) and I ordered the pattern. The pattern is easy to follow and well written with full size templates and helpful diagrams. Even making the zip closure wasn't difficult. Stuffing it is (as the pattern recommends) definitely a two person job! Although by the end I was using a little ceramic jug to squeeze a few more polystyrene beads in.
I used dotty fabrics from Terry's Fabrics in Smoke, Sage, Powder Blue and Lime. The Smoke and Sage are great soft colours, I like the vintage feel of the Powder Blue but that Lime really pops and adds a nice vibrancy. I also chose to have visible selvedges because they are so cool, I like the numbers and also the washing instruction icons. It feels nice and sturdy but it's still lightweight, using home dec fabrics and lots of quilting gives it great shape and stability.
The 'LOVE' cross stitch worked out really well using DMC Soluble Aida Canvas, you can get the pattern here. I spent a lot of time deciding what to stitch on it. I wanted something I would love looking at, that would be nice for the whole family and meant something to me. My husband and I saw the Love sculpture by Robert Indiana in New York while we were on our honeymoon so it's a romantic reminder for us too. I slightly messed up my count but you'd have a hard time seeing it I think and since I'd already quilted the top when I decided to stitch it and had to push through three layers there was no way I was unpicking anything!! Regardless I love it and I love my footstool. It's a final check off my Q2 FAL list.
divide and order - le challenge
This month's theme at le challenge was order. Something that we need lots of around here! I chose to use Noodleheads fabulous Divided Basket pattern to make a basket for all my rose star fabrics and papers (see an update on the quilt here).
For the main part of the basket I used Cactus Calico in Fiesta, Hope Valley by Denyse Schmidt; the pocket is Wallflower in Piney Woods, Hope Valley by Denyse Schmidt and the binding is Feathers in Grass, Sun Print by Alison Glass; the lining is Dotty curtain fabric in lime and the handles are cotton webbing.
It goes rather nicely with the thread catcher fabric basket I made last month!
So now everything's in order and I can get on with getting the quilt finished. I will try not to make another basket for next months link though I really could use these cute baskets in every room!

All the trimmings
Recently I finished making this cushion using vintage trims and you can find the tutorial over on the terry's fabrics 'how to' site - check out Fiona's super cute beachy draught excluder too. I like the vintage but simple modern look of this cushion and it's really quick to sew:
I love lace and ribbon and random decorative trims, I would hoard baskets full of that stuff if I could! Better to put them to use though and they really look pretty against the powder blue dotty fabric.

le challenge - the rising sun
I made a much needed project for this challenge and it was easy to do to, in fact I managed it while the baby took a nap so a quick, handy and fun make! I chose to interpret the theme of the rising sun by using some of my Japanese fabric.
I've used this fabric basket pattern before it is by the lovely Ayumi of Pink Penguin, who happens to live in Tokyo.
The patchwork is made with some lovely Japanese fabric scraps, which I got a couple of years ago from the Eternal Maker, some other scraps that had been given to me in a swap and some of Karen's beautiful hand printed fabric. The bottom and lining are from Terry's Fabrics, lime and sage dotty curtain fabric. The handles are cotton webbing from the Village Haberdashery.
I made the patchwork squares larger than the pattern at 2.5" and enlarged the bottom section and lining accordingly. This means I can chuck more threads and little fabric scraps into it while I'm doing EPP or applique. It is nice to finally have a pretty bin and another tick off my FAL list!

fourth quarter FAL list
I love the finish-a-long for keeping my projects in check and also for giving me goals. Here's my list for the last quarter of 2013...
1. My Feather Bee blocks quilt - needs basting and quilting
2. Apple Bib - although I made two of these bibs I've had a third one unfinished on my desk for months, I'm putting it on the list so that I finish it!
3. Pattern testing quilt - top done, needs basting and quilting
4. Star Flower QAL - need to get this pieced already!
5. Pencil cases/zip bags for gifts - I've sewn together some little panels of scraps, I want to add a bit of applique too.
6. Woodland Sampler - since it's nearing the end of the year I would like to actually finish the sampler in December and try to frame it so I can display it proudly.
7. Rose Star Quilt - this one might be a push since I'm going to hand quilt it but I've decided since the feather quilt is so huge I don't need to make this one so big. Also the thought of making loads more started to feel overwhelming and I don't want this special quilt to turn into an unloved one so I'm going to do a few more and see how big I want it to be.
8. I got these gorgeous spotty curtain fabrics from Terry's Fabrics and I'm going to use them to make a pouffe (ottoman). I'm especially in love with the lime dots and I've been wanting a pouffe for absolutely ages (while nursing it would be so much more comfortable!) and now this giant plastic bag of beans has arrived I really need to get sewing because there's no room to hide it in my house!
9. Finally I need to finish up my Le Challenge project for this month's theme of THRILLER, I'm really enjoying this mad cross stitching!
