fabric and day off frolics
I'm gearing up to prepare for next year, despite this definitely being the time of year where I feel like hibernating! It's time to make plans, thinking about what next year will bring and sorting out sewing projects. I'm hoping to get things in order over the Christmas break, sorting out my sewing stuff ready for a fresh start in 2020. Recently there have been a few stash additions, I've been out in Manchester stocking up and enjoying cheese toasties, and finally sneaking some project finishes in!
As I continue to work on my Manx Log Cabin blocks I realised I wouldn't have enough Essex Metallic for the centres so ordered a bit more from Sew Hot and the other prints were just irresistible:

Honestly it's pretty easy to resist these urges nowadays but when it comes to Rashida Coleman-Hale prints I have no control because they are always fabulous.
This next selection was a surprise treat, a very kind lady that came to one of my classes had been to Standfast & Barracks and picked up these big cuts of Liberty Tana Lawn. She knew I loved Liberty and so I got all this for less than the price of 1/2 metre! These aren't scraps, they are large folded pieces. I'm very grateful she let me buy them from her and these snowdrops have already found their way into my log cabin blocks.

Three is the magic number! Here are 3 recent quilt finishes, quite different in style, and a little needle book for the cuteness. These were all made for Sewing Quarter, you can catch up with the shows on YouTube and if you keep reading you'll reach the clip I've included that shows how I bind (I'm making the needle case but I sew binding on quilts the same way!).
This quilt is my Mai Tai Pineapple quilt, so named because the bright colours reminded me of tropical cocktails as I was making it!

The Creative Grids Pineapple Trim Tool allowed me create blocks from strips and then accurately trim so each 'round' of the pineapple is perfect. I did make a couple of errors trimming a couple of the final rounds but after all that piecing I just made them work as best as I could. Overall I still love this quilt so much. The colours are fabulous, all Makower solids and the darker greens in the centres and outer corners of the blocks makes a nice contrast.
There is so much movement in the quilt, all those lines are quite mesmerising. This style of quilt as been on my 'to sew' list for a long time and I imagine I will make more in the future because the effect is so impressive.
It was tricky to come up with a quilting pattern that wouldn't compete with the pattern of the piecing and that wasn't overly time consuming. In the end I remembered someone mentioning that decorative stitches could be used in place of stitches to 'tie' the quilt. I kept it very simple and did a stitch in the centre of the squares and at the corners. If it was being used at my house I would have added in a few more! The overall effect is soft and the piecing keeps the stability of the front, while the back is slightly tufted.

sunday stash favourites
I adore everything Lucy SkinnyMalinkyQuilts prints, and her latest design is no exception! I got this print in three colourways - there are even more variations in her shop and you can create your own bundles. The hand printed panels are so unique and check out the spot fabric she has too!
Next was some much needed back up glue refills and the beautiful (but hard to photograph) Essex Yarn Dyed Metallic in black, oyster and sand from Simply Solids. This is for my Mischief Quilt.
Finally I can't resist Liberty, especially when it's £9.00 a metre (with an extra 10% off at checkout)!! stashing and stitching
I have had some happy mail recently, some necessary or just because and a couple of nice surprises!
First up I needed to get some more Liberty bias tape for my Green Tea and Sweet Beans quilt borders from The Weaver's Mill. The top two prints just fell into the basket.

Next Spoonflower had their buy one, get one free fat quarter deal - so I did, twice. I really enjoy searching through all the designs, there are so many great artists/graphic designers/print makers. It's like pinterest to me, very inspiring! While browsing I came across Sally Harmon, boris_thumbkin, Sally's designs are really cool, very graphic style with interesting colours and shapes. I was especially taken by how different cultures and styles find their way into her designs. I was feeling the retro vibe in the prints I chose by her and I have an idea of what I will be using them for. In contrast is a grid paper print by Lorrie Cranor, lorrietweet, which I got just because it's simple and awesome.

I usually buy on Kona Cotton but this time I went for the poplin. Other people have seemed to like it so I will see how it washes and compare. It does feel lovely, though it still has that printed stiffness. I will let you know how I get on with it.
After trying a Q-Snap frame at the retreat - thanks Hannah! - I had to get one. It's so simple to use, collapses down and is really comfortable too.

hexie flower hoops
Blogging is such a wonderful way for me to keep track of my projects and a quick search tells me I made these hexie flowers in November 2013, back when Lois was a baby! It's amazing I didn't loose them between then and now really.
Initially I think I planned to make a few english paper pieced flowers, to use up every teeny tiny scrap of Liberty. I made three. Small isn't really my favourite thing.
They have been on some of my finish-a-long lists since then but only recently have I finally found something I wanted to make with them (I did think about a pincushion and possibly a cushion at one point).
I have already made a tiny embroidery hoop using one and now the other two have been appliqued and put into adorable little hoops too.
I bought the hoops from Sew Cross Handmade, these are 2" hoops but she stocks various sizes. The quality is fabulous, I highly recommend her shop!
The hoops come with wooden backs, which you can glue on to cover the back and also add a brooch pin if you chose to. I use wonderclips to hold the pieces together while the glue dries, it works a treat.
I can tick these off my Q4 FAL list now ✔

Archity or Libertextures cushion
Neither of those sounds right does it?!
I have finished my EPP cushion using Liberty and Architextures fabrics and it's a tick off my FAL list.
The Liberty Tana Lawn I won in a giveaway from Katy and is from Very Berry Fabrics.
I also used Cross Hatch in White from Architextures by Carolyn Friedlander.
The backing fabric is Hop Dot in Olive from Nicey Jane by Heather Bailey (this is one of my favourite ever prints and I love all the colour ways!)

I have finished hand quilting my Liberty / Architextures cushion:
I used Aurifil wool 12wt in 8942 from a sample pack. It's so soft and works really well with the Liberty Tana Lawn.
So just need to make a back and get it sewn up.
I did some crafting with the kids and their friends yesterday after school. They made hand puppets. Here is Joan's version, I love her style!
