2017 Finish-A-Long • Quarter 3

02 July 2017

It's time to link up your list of unfinished projects that you propose to finish in Quarter 3 of the FAL. I am looking forward to seeing what you are planning to be working on over the next quarter!

The FAL is hosted by a community of bloggers across the world. Our hosts are:
  • Rhonda - Rhonda's [Quilt] Ramblings - USA
  • Nicky - Mrs Sew & Sow - Great Britain
  • Abigail - Cut & Alter - Great Britain
  • Izzy - Dizzy Quilts - Canada
  • Ella - Throw a Wench in the Works - USA
  • Lucy - Charm about You - Great Britain
  • Sarah - Sew me - Northern Ireland
  • Judith - Just Jude - Northern Ireland
  • Felicity - Felicity Quilts - Canada
  • Marci - Marci Girl Designs - USA
  • Karen - Capitola Quilter - USA
  • Leanne - She Can Quilt - Canada
Social Media Director
  • Sandra, Sew of Course - Ireland
For those of you who are new to the FAL, it is a place to find motivation and encouragement to complete those unfinished projects that are hanging about becoming UFOs. Every quarter you post a list of projects you hope to finish in the next three months, and then at the end of the quarter, you post a link from your blog, Flickr or Instagram of each successful finish from your original list.

Each finish is an entry for wonderful prizes from our sponsors. There is no penalty for not finishing a listed project, so feel free to make your list long or short, as you wish. The 2017 Schedule and Rules for the FAL are on my permanent FAL page, let me know if you have any questions.

Here are the fantastic and generous sponsors for Q3 of the FAL - you can see each of their prizes listed under their logo (think about visiting them and saying thank you):

As you may recall from last year, there was a return of tutorial week at the end of each quarter, between the opening of the link for finishes and the day that link closes. Are you enjoying this? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below! This will take place each quarter. Each host works hard to put these together so I hope you are visiting their blogs to encourage them. If you have a tutorial that you would like to share, please let me or another host know.

It's time to round up those projects you want to finish over the next three months, take a photo of each one and make your list. Please ensure that you have at least started your projects - pulled fabric with a pattern is now considered a UFO, and remember it is only finished projects that will get you an entry toward the above listed prizes. So while we love to see your bee blocks, the "finish" is when they are a completed, usable project.

It is very helpful if you tag your list as #2017FALQ3yourname when posting on social media: Flickr, Facebook & Instagram. Using the same hashtag over the quarter when sharing progress or finishes before the link, helps the hosts find your original list quickly - especially when this is done over a 3 month period. IMPORTANT: Don't forget to link your finishes up when the quarter closes.

The 2017 Q3 link for your list of proposed finishes is now open below on my blog and on each of the hosting blogs. You need only link your list once, on one blog - and that link will show up on all of the blogs. If you are using Facebook, Flickr or Instagram, link a mosaic and put your list in the description. Katy of The Littlest Thistle has a great tutorial on how to link-up if you need it.

We also ask that you become part of the FAL community. Please check out the links of others - visit and comment on their lists. We all need encouragement to get those finishes done, so please share some of your own too. There is no naughty corner for those that haven't completed everything on their list, so you might as well link up everything and anything you are working on or plan to! If they don't get finished you can roll them over to the next link. Be brave and list them all!!

The Q3 proposed finish linky party will stay open until 11 pm EST, July 8, 2017- as we are global, you might want to check your time zone to determine your last possible time to link. Remember: you only need to link up on ONE hosting blog and it will automatically show up on all hosting blogs.

direction ~ le challenge ~ tissue holders

14 July 2015

ok so I have to be honest and say this was plan B. I usually like to tie my le challenge project in with something else I'm doing (my limited sewing time means this is kind of a must) so I had to rethink when plan A failed. Actually it didn't fail but I was hoping to have my English Paper Pieced mini finished by now. The 14th has snuck up on me and I realised there was no way I could get it done (even if I pulled a couple of all nighters). EPP is not for rushing!

So yesterday I looked at what needed to get done and handily I just wrote my Finish-Along list. Obviously I had to do a quick sew and Kelly's tissue holder tutorial was the perfect thing! She posted a clever and simple tutorial on instagram and I thought they would be perfect to add into end of year gift bags for my kids teachers.

This is such a fast sew, I encourage you to look at the tutorial and make a few! They'd be perfect to have on hand as extra gifts / stocking fillers. Cute to carry in your handbag and nice for kids school bags too. Thanks for sharing your tutorial Kelly! Six tissue holders complete and the first check off my FAL list.

I chose to make this for the le challenge theme because of the wonderful teachers my children have. Under their direction my kids have had really good school reports this year! Clever hey?!

We always have amazing, creative people linking up so come and take a peek and join in if you have a finish that ties in with the theme 'direction' at le challenge

get serious ~ FAL Q3 2015

13 July 2015

I made 4/8 finishes from quarter two but they were only small makes and I feel like I haven't finished a quilt in forever. I have more small makes to add this time round but I am really hoping to crack some bigger projects and actually finish some quilts (I feel like I've said that a lot this year *sigh*). So, despite the fact that the kids will be off school, I am being ambitious and hope you will all cheer me on in getting actual quilts finished this quarter!

The first four projects I need to finish are rolled over from last quarter...

1. The commissioned vintage quilt that I'm hand quilting, I'm making slow but steady progress:

2. Summer dresses for my girls, I cut all the pieces last year and now I'm worried they won't even fit and summer might be over already (!) but might as well give it a go:

3. Baby star quilt, I think I have one row to add and it's been sat in a crumpled state next to my sewing table for way too long!

4. A skirt for me, just because I couldn't resist this beautiful Japanese denim - I would like to prioritise some selfish sewing:

And the new projects that I've recently started or need to get done...

5. Another make just for me. I loved the drawstring tote I made using Svetlana's pattern so much I immediately bought supplies to make one for myself. It's such a perfect size, really handy for nipping to the shops or for carting home the kids crap models and art from school.

6. My Star Crossed Night Sky quilt, using this It's Sew Emma pattern:

7. Teachers gifts for the end of term - which is next week so need to get on it. I'm planning on making some drawstring bags (I like using Jeni's tutorial) and to put inside I got some mugs for the kids to decorate, so that should be fun! I got this Pebeo Marker, which I've read works better than a Sharpie so we'll see:

8. Just today I saw a fabulous instagram tutorial for these cute tissue holders by Kelly - she kindly let me borrow her picture (thanks Kelly!) - check out her IG feed! I think these will be a nice little extra to pop in the bags for the teachers so I've picked out some fabric ready to sew.

Finally I'm making samples of patterns I've designed to teach at Patchfinders...

9. An English Paper Pieced mini quilt, which I started a few days ago:

10. A pencil quilt (no pictures of my messy quilt maths allowed but I will be using some solid fabrics!):

11. An embroidered needle case, this gives me a great reason to use my new Fat Quarter Shop Aurifloss Set:

I also have to whip up a few samples of free motion quilting patterns for a class, not sure I'm allowed to count that in the fal since they will probably stay as quilt sandwiches but it's more stuff I have to get done so I'm noting it here anyway (maybe a cheerleader can let me know if class samples like this count?!).

a handy list for the Finish Along Quarter 3

10 July 2014

I think I'm nuts. I have no grasp on reality. It's so unlikely I will finish all of this by the beginning of October but what the heck it's a good way for me to keep an eye on my ongoing projects and if I did finish one and hadn't put it on the list I'd be gutted ;)

So here is my Finish Along list for Quarter 3 AKA the 'Lucy you are nuts and will never achieve all those projects with so much hand stitchery unless you hire skilled sewing minions' list...

#1 - Hand quilt Vintage quilt - A commission to finish hand quilting this vintage hexie quilt, which has been started and worked on by three generations of women. Not a project to rush at all but I would like to think I can work away at it a little at a time and get it finished.

#2 - Secret quilt - Pattern testing and so far very pleased with my points!

#3 - Buggy liner - I had originally bought this Rocket Age fabric simply because I loved it and thought I could use Fred as an excuse to make something with it but my friend spied it and wanted me to make her a buggy liner for the warmer months and so I'm using a couple of these to do just that.

#4 - Two pillowcase dresses - a commission and I'm excited to use my lovely Tula!

#5 - Two more pillowcase dresses - these ones are for my girls using pretty Essentials by Pat Bravo prints.

#6 - Skirt - I got this bargain fabric from Minerva Crafts and am going to attempt to make myself a skirt! They have lots of clearance sale fabrics, great for dressmaking and most under £3 a metre.

#7 and #8 - Two secret projects - the first is the orange project, it's a secret and it's orangey; the second is also a secret and uses some mini charms.

#9 - Scottie Dogs - using more mini charms.

#10 - One for me!!! - I'm making myself a project from the book Quilting on the Go using yummy Cotton and Steel!

#11 - A small make - for this month's theme at Le Challenge.

#12 - Japanese x and + Quilt - using Arizona by April Rhodes because I love it!

So that's all my new stuff, here's the projects that haven't been finished since the last FAL list (or last few FAL lists I've made!)

#11 - Liberty hexies - they are so tiny what was I thinking?! I don't have time to such little fiddly things! Get turned into something already... though they are so pretty!

#12 - Rose Star Quilt - how I love thee. Hexie borders in progress. I might be putting this off because I don't want it to end or because I've run out of wadding!! :(

#13 - Embroidered poem - so so close to finishing but didn't want to rush just to link up last quarter.

#14 - Butterfly Quilt - Saving my last bit of wadding to get this basted since it's for my daughter and I want it done so she can stop asking me about it... though I will be hand quilting it.

#15 - Star flower quilt - whatever... ran out of wadding... more excuses... languishing.
