neon clouds drawstring tote bag
I do like a bit of selfish sewing but it's taken me over a year to finally get round to making myself this awesome tote bag. It took hardly any time to sew, I am in love with it!
I have made this pattern before, which is how I knew I wanted to make one for myself. It is the Drawstring Tote Bag pattern by Svetlana @ Sotak Handmade. It's a really fun sew and there's so many ways to make it your own, I would like to do a patchwork version at some point.
I added a pocket on the inside, my first time doing that! I knew I would want one if I'm going to be using the bag a lot.
I also used the same waterproof fabric as my Geeky Flying Geese Bag but this time put it in between the outside and the lining just so my stuff stays dry.
An added advantage is that it's made the bag sturdier and possibly stronger too.
After contemplating using some ribbon for the ties I ultimately decided just to make my own fabric ones, I had enough left over from the lining. I like that it has text on it and I do love Doris Day!

Some fabrics are too good to miss and I have had awesome fabric deliveries this week.
First this stunning haul from Fat Quarter Shop, mostly Cotton & Steel because I really love the way all of the collections can be mixed together and still work so well - those ladies are very clever!

That Black and White print from Andover is so striking, I was pleased to come across that one while browsing the Fat Quarter Shop site. I also think Playing Pop is such a brilliant collection, AGF Studios do amazing prints and really thoughtfully curated collections, they are often ahead of the trends too so keep an eye on them!

I am purposeful ~ FAL Q3 2016
I have been saying 'yes' a lot lately, which means I have a few deadlines and some are secret ones that can't go on the list! With that in mind I am starting my Quarter 3 Finish-A-Long list with what must be done, followed by 'if there's any time left'...
1. A quilt made with the gorgeous Chalk & Paint by Sew Caroline for Art Gallery Fabrics. I still have a couple of rows to piece and then can hopefully get quilting this weekend.
2. I have some lovely Tilda fabric that I would like to use to make things for my girls, I'm thinking some nice baskets for their room...
3. and some cute hair accessories would be good, especially since my middle daughter is growing her fringe out (again!)
4. I am excitedly planning a mini quilt from the Simply Solids bundle I curated!
5. A heap of See It All pouches - pattern by @laura_zuckerkuss - for teachers gifts and class samples. The fabric is ready:
6. Although I have never made a pickle dish I want to create a rainbow pickle dish cushion and use it as a class sample. I have been very inspired by these gorgeous blocks Mary made:
and just for me if I get time...
7. My Rose Star quilt, only a few more centre hexies to quilt and then I need a plan for more quilting?!
8. A tote bag than has been on this list many, many times and always gets forgotten or pushed down the list!! Just seeing that cloud fabric again makes me want to make it right now:
So that little lot combined with secret sewing should be plenty to keep me going!

I have been meaning to blog all week but somehow haven't quite managed it. I have some personal stuff going on in my head and want to share but need to find the words... don't worry it's nothing terrible and hopefully I can express it properly soon. Anxiety is running rife so I will be leaning on all of you if you'll let me.
For now I'm just going to show you the goodies that have joined my stash recently.
I picked some pretty fabrics from Sunny Day Supply - I really couldn't resist these cats and matches, which are so fabulous! The daisy print feels beautifully soft and the middle print is going to prove so useful, sort of retro but also modern.

I love the extras I got with my order, along with a sweet hand written note. Such great customer service and just so thoughtful!
I needed to stock up on zips again and my favourite place to buy them is Rickety Rose Crafts. Rose has a fabulous range of zips and crafting supplies to make your projects pretty! Look at these great colours:
I needed some cotton webbing and this Illuminated Graph in Metallic Fog, Loominous by Anna Maria Horner fabric (which is impossible to get a good picture of but is so pretty in real life) just jumped into my basket at The Village Haberdashery:
I got my first box of the BOM from Sew & Quilt. I haven't ever subscribed to a block of the month that included fabric but Jessie has such great taste, I love the fabrics in her shop! I have seen other people making the Lucy Boston 'Patchwork of the Crosses' quilts and I am so drawn to this pattern. Also Lucy, so I had to ;)
It is taking all my willpower not to start this straight away but my pile of WIPs is crazy and this will be my reward for getting some of them finished!

And because I have no willpower when it comes to fabric I got these from Patchfinders. It's hard to leave empty handed when you work in a quilt shop! The two on the left were bought by customers and I just love them (and the middle one is only £6 a metre!), the sewing themed one arrived while I was at work and called out to be fussy cut!

Lovely Lisa offered to send me some Thimble Pads because I had never tried them. I didn't actually realise they were leather and somehow thought they were rubber or plastic and would feel horrible, like wearing a plaster. How wrong I was! I've always struggled with thimbles, the last one I bought was leather and I do prefer that to others I've tried but after having it for a while it's started to stretch a bit and since I only really use one spot it has begun to wear away. I don't even always wear it so I also have a nice dent at the top of my middle finger! ouch!
I've been trying a Thimble Pad for the past couple of days and I'm totally hooked. It's saving my finger! They are so easy to use and totally reusable. I was put off by how many you get in a pack, thinking they would only last a little while but Lisa assures me they last a really long time and I can believe her. I can't recommend these enough, whether you like thimbles or not they are worth a go! People have been telling me how much they love them on instagram and I wish I had tried them sooner.

Finally one of my dearest friends (of nearly 20 years) knitted me this gorgeous hat. I'm completely smitten. The colours, the style, it's so perfectly me and it's keeping me nice and cosy on these blustery days!

just because and plans for selfish sewing
Sometimes I buy fabric 'just because'. When Pink Castle Fabrics had a sale on their Japanese fabrics I scooped this up mostly because they are pretty (I had my eye on the Hiding Cats one for a while!):

wood ~ le challenge ~ drawstring tote bag
This one was cutting it fine, but I made it... here's my finish for the le challenge theme 'wood':
Since I don't have loads of time to sew I like to try and check a couple of things of my 'to do' list when I can. My eldest daughter has an upcoming birthday party to go to so I thought I would make a bag for the birthday girl.
I used Svetlana's Drawstring Tote Bag pattern and some bird/tree fabric I have had in my stash for a while - the recipient's name begins with a 'S' so I thought it would be perfect - and the trees are my link to the theme 'wood'.
I picked out the lime and pink from the feature fabric and it works well, the pink is a cotton canvas that was given to me and it adds a nice weight to the bottom and I used it for the handles and lining too. I only quilted it every 2 inches but the canvas gives it added strength and I was pushed for time!
The pattern is fantastic, so quick to make and nice details like the casing for the ties and the outer corners sewn in to the seam:
I used ribbon rather than making fabric ties and happened to have two colours of ribbon that matched nicely. I would love to buy something I could use for ties like this, something studier than ribbon that would work for a drawstring - does anyone in the UK have any recommendations? I would happily stock up on neutral ties because I am definitely making more of these bags and I don't really like making my own ties from fabric. I have ordered some twill ribbon from The Village Haberdashery because I think that will work nicely but please leave a comment if you have any suggestions or let me know what you use!
This bag is easy to make but looks fancy and I will be making one for Fred and one for myself! I might make some for teachers gifts too.

I hope those of you in the UK have enjoyed Mothering Sunday! I called my Nan earlier and the kids wished her a 'Happy Mother's Day', she was of course delighted but later in the conversation admitted to being annoyed at receiving cards saying 'Happy Mother's Day' when it is traditionally called Mothering Sunday. I suspect it is another of those Americanisms that she hates regards with disdain. So this is a note to self to remember to always wish her a joyful Mothering Sunday! We had a lovely chat and I was laughing with her so much that when I put the phone down I cried. In sadness, at the loss of my Grandad (she reminded me of some very funny stories about him - they were married for over 60 years), but also in joy at how close we are.
A gorgeous bundle of fabric arrived for me on Friday, the very talented Kelly had a giveaway from The Village Haberdashery (Annie sure is fast at getting parcels sent out!). Thank you Kelly and Annie!
I'm absolutely in love with it but have yet to decide what will become of it, triangles maybe? My next EPP quilt?
I couldn't resist getting this FQ from work to add to my rose star quilt and I've been eyeing up a lot of fabric but need to crack on with my WIPs for now rather than adding more to my stash!
On another note I have over 600 unread emails in my inbox and as much as I want to read through them all and reply I have to admit defeat and that's just not going to happen. So if you've emailed me a question or something and I've not got back to you please try again and I will try to keep on top of them better from now on (but can't promise)!
divide and order - le challenge
This month's theme at le challenge was order. Something that we need lots of around here! I chose to use Noodleheads fabulous Divided Basket pattern to make a basket for all my rose star fabrics and papers (see an update on the quilt here).
For the main part of the basket I used Cactus Calico in Fiesta, Hope Valley by Denyse Schmidt; the pocket is Wallflower in Piney Woods, Hope Valley by Denyse Schmidt and the binding is Feathers in Grass, Sun Print by Alison Glass; the lining is Dotty curtain fabric in lime and the handles are cotton webbing.
It goes rather nicely with the thread catcher fabric basket I made last month!
So now everything's in order and I can get on with getting the quilt finished. I will try not to make another basket for next months link though I really could use these cute baskets in every room!
