window zippered pouches

23 November 2021

Back with another Aurifil Artisan project! This month I was sent some gorgeous Free Spirit fabrics to play with, along with a spool of 50 weight thread. I received two cuts of the stunning Little Fluffy Clouds in Cloud, Daydreamer by Tula Pink and a deep purple solid (which I think might be Tula Pink Solids in Tanzanite?!). The Daydreamer collection has some really stunning prints, including one called Lucy!

The Little Fluffy Clouds print is a beautiful ombre, from yellow to green to blue - you get a better sense of it in this picture from the Free Spirit website (and there are two other colourways of this print available):

I ummed and ahed about what to make for some time. I was a bit stumped. For inspiration I turned to my bookmarks, all the web pages I have saved for later, to one day make projects from tutorials. What a great resource! Though it turns out some of them no longer exist and many weren't right for these fabrics... but I did hit on a winner.

a bookmark with purpose

21 April 2020

Having already made my mum a similar bookmark, I decided to make one for myself. Given the current situation and the fact we are staying at home, it has made me focus on small things but also the bigger picture. I'm grateful for so much right now and have found it helpful to think about what I would like to achieve in this time. Not to 'hustle' or have unrealistic expectations of a million things I could do or learn or create. Rather what is important, can I prioritise the things I put off but really want to do. I'm still working full time but with kids evening activities on hold right now and no where to go at the weekends, I do have a more time.

I set my word of the year 'clear' as a reminder to focus on what matters to me. The word is written in my planner, on my vision board and a bookmark seemed another good way to keep my intentions clear!

The lettering is from the book Cross Stitch Designs by Ondori and I used Aurifloss to stitch on linen.

carry around some quiet

28 December 2019

This was part of my mum's Christmas present. I had this idea in my head, to combine some cross stitch and Kraft-tex to make a bookmark. This is really a very basic make but I'm pleased with how it turned out and hope it will wear well as she uses it. I know that Kraft-tex can actually feel better the more it's handled and it should still hold its shape, as it helpfully conceals the guts of the cross stitching.

fabric bookmark tutorial

14 March 2016

The theme over at Le Challenge this month is 'reading'. I decided to make a bookmark and I wanted something that would feel sturdy but still look cute! Here's how I made my laminated fabric bookmark...

Supplies:

505 Craft Adhesive
(2) 2" x 7" pieces of fabric
1.75" x 6.5" piece of Aida or thin cardboard
small fabric scraps
Sewline glue pen
paper to cover your work surface
a laminating machine and laminating pouch (optional)

If you would like to create a frayed edge, use a woven fabric and gently pull the threads from the bottom. Repeat on the other piece of fabric and put them together to make sure you have the same amount of fraying.

Spray one side of Aida lightly with the adhesive and stick to the wrong side of one of the pieces of fabric. Spray again and place the other fabric piece on top, right side facing up.

Now for the fun bit, decorate your bookmark using fabric scraps!
Originally I tried to use up some teeny bits of Liberty and make a confetti pattern but it just didn't work as I envisioned.

I opted instead to fussy cut some Liberty print flowers and create a collage...

Which was much prettier! I used embroidery scissors, layered the flowers and stuck them down with the glue pen.

At this point you could quilt over your design, just a few straight stitches will hold it in place, then top stitch around the edges (and above the fraying). You could also zig zag the edges.

Another simple way to finish, that will give structure and make your bookmark more hard wearing is to laminate it. I do like a glossy finish!

Since putting one small bookmark through the laminator felt wasteful I also made myself a little inspiration card to keep in my planner. I used a Project Life card, some washi and stickers.

A little tip - if you are laminating and want rounded corners, use nail clippers to take the points off the corners!

Check out the other finishes at Le Challenge and link up your 'reading' projects for a chance to win great prizes :)
