Go-Go bowl and Sajou sewing supplies
08 January 2017
Isn't this such a cute bowl?! I made it using Go-Go Kim's fantastic pattern 'Go-Go Bowl', available from Go-Go Kim Sews on Etsy or on Craftsy.
I loved making it, the pattern is really well written with great instructions. The blanket stitching was so meditative and simple hand sewing during the evening is my favourite thing to do. This would look lovely in so many fabrics but I went with a retro / modern mix.
Outer fabric: Blue Tape Measures by Suzuko Koseki
Inner fabric: Sprinkle in Jelly Bracelet by Cotton + Steel
Thread is a big passion of mine, I like trying different brands and types. I got some Fil Au Chinois Gloving thread from Sajou last year and it's such good quality, strong but fine. So I thought I would try their embroidery thread too and picked out some pretty colours:
I also bought this Garnish Awl. After doing the Sew Sturdy Travel Organizers class and seeing how Annie used her stiletto, I really wanted to try one. Despite looking everywhere I couldn't find an awl, I thought we had one but suspect it might have been a big DIY one anyway! So this cute green one will be perfect. She uses it to help her sew at the machine, to hold things in place or any time when you want to put your fingers close to the needle but can't. When I start to use it I will let you know if it is as handy as it she makes it seem, I suspect it will be.
Sajou also kindly sent these lovely thread cards with my order, I especially love the Eiffel tower one!
I hope you've all had a lovely weekend, my kids are back at school tomorrow so I might be able to crack on with some sewing projects!

hopeful and trying ~ Autumn, Blossom and Iris

So it's been a little while and I have slowly been working on my Farmer's Wife 1930's Sew-along blocks.
Currently my household has suffered a horrible bout of gastroenteritis, myself included, and my son has badly sprained his foot. The three kids are tucked up on the sofa watching a movie and I'm hoping they might be able to enjoy the sunshine later today if they perk up a bit.
Please forgive the horrible cropping of the first couple of blocks, it's just the best I can do right now and they would not lie flat!
I decided to go back to some English paper piecing, I've been doing a lot of hand piecing so it made a nice change. It also gave me a chance to test out the fabulous Fil Au Chinois Gloving Thread from Sajou*. I've been using it in combination with the Milliners Size 11 by Richard Hemming & Son needles from Sunny Day Supply. I'm really pleased, the stitches are almost invisible and it's a definite improvement.
As always I chose the fabrics for the blocks based on the letters in the The Farmer's Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt, I really enjoy picking out fabrics and one of favourite things about the Sew-along is reading the letters!
#9 Autumn
I fussy cut some Shibuya, Tokyo Train Ride by Sarah Watts to represent the children and the Doe weave print is for the work and business. The beautiful Coquette print by Art Gallery Fabrics (from Patchfinders) is perfect for the "relaxation of both mind and body". I would love to have a "little siesta" but I can't imagine the trouble the three year old could get into! Instead my "precious half-hour" comes after bed time.
#15 Blossom
It's all about life's little things isn't it? The simple act of a neighbour sharing plants lifted the Flower Lover's spirits. I chose Peaches Sprinkle for "hope and courage" and combined it with a mix of Liberty prints, in shades of blue because she was "discouraged and blue". Those pretty blooms make me "happy and hopeful" too though!
#44 Iris
I love the graphic look of this flower and think it's one the prettiest blocks. I picked out a purple spot print from one of Jen Kingwell's Gardenvale prints (similar to the Lollies) and the Pickle, Carkai by Carolyn Friedlander was perfect since they were "putting up pickles and making jelly". I really wanted to stick to the colours of the flower for this one though and I think it works nicely.
I'm still missing some blocks out and that's ok. There's so many gorgeous blocks being made in the facebook group, it's full of inspiration!
Think I will join the kids on the sofa and this week I would like to get some things checked off my FAL list so wish me luck with that :)

bees, friends, finds and Sajou!

Yes that's a cat in an avocado. It's an avocatdo. There's no resisting when you love avocados and cats! This patch is from Pony People - Anne's shop is all about kitty cuteness and she makes adorable kitty planters that always sell out super fast. I have yet to make my mind up about where to put the patch, I'm thinking my denim jacket is probably the best idea.
I managed to snatch up one of Jo's Liberty scrap bundles from The Greene Stitch Co.. There are some of my favourite prints in there, some I've never seen and they all blow my mind. I know Liberty is a bit marmite (you love it or hate it) but you have to applaud them for the huge diversity in their prints and the design skills are incredible. Look at those clouds and that lightening, 'Melting Elements C' inspired by Krink!
I've been trying out different needles and my lovely friend Mary sent me some of her favourites, Milliners Size 11 by Richard Hemming & Son. They are so beautifully fine and perfect for EPP or hand sewing. I'm keeping these for EPP because they really help keep those stitches less noticeable. Thank you Mary! You can get these needles at Mary's shop Sunny Day Supply.

I have also been trying different thread, I've enjoyed the YLI silk thread I got but it's not totally won me over and I generally prefer working with Aurifil 50wt, though I would still like something finer.
I saw a recommendation for Fil Au Chinois Gloving Thread from Sajou* and before I knew it I was filling up an online basket! They were kind enough to include some embroidery thread for me to try and some beautiful thread cards:
I bought three different colours of the Gloving and applique thread - I have a light, medium and dark.
So far I have just used the thread for appliqué and it is really fantastic. So fine but strong. It is a waxed cotton and it glides through the fabric. I will let you know how I get on when I've used it for English Paper Piecing but I definitely recommend it for appliqué!
I also treated myself to a couple of DMC Library: Cross Stitch books. My stitching book collection isn't extensive and these are chock full of inspiring patterns and designs. I got the second and the fourth series.
Each book contains different alphabets and motifs. I'm enjoying just gazing at these pages and I even see some quilt patterns in there!
Check out Sajou and have a look around, they have so many beautiful sewing notions and goods!
I was excited to see Skinny Malinky Quilts screen printed panels pop up on my Instagram. I love bees and managed to get a panel printed on Kona Highlight. It's a very hard colour to photograph but you can see the glorious printed bees:
I've started working on making a basket from the project booklet that came with Issue 29 of Love Patchwork and Quilting, designed by Fiona @ Poppy Makes. I like the panel paired with this Japanese denim. Kind of an 80's vibe. I remember being about nine and having some nail polish that was this yellow!
It was sale day at Patchfinders over the weekend and wow were we busy! It was a lot of fun and I managed to buy some bits for myself. I stocked up on wadding and got a back up of my favourite water erasable pen. I also bought some Gradations by Caryl Bryer Fallert in a really pretty dusky pink.

Finally my friend at work brought in this Flea Market Fancy by Denyse Schmidt, it wasn't right for the project she was making and she knew I would use it. Obviously I will because it's gorgeous!! This is one of my favourite prints from the collection, it makes beautiful binding too. Thank you so much Jean!
