〰 stitchy / fabric stash 〰

25 March 2021

I'm a busy bee over here, so many projects being planned and worked on. Of course when you craft, you need supplies! Happy mail in the form of fabric, cross stitch supplies and vintage trim. Over the past couple of months I have bought the things you'll see here, some have already been used and others are for upcoming makes that I will share soon. Shopping small and supporting independent businesses is important and I found some fun creative businesses to buy from. This post is really a way for me to keep a record of the things I've bought so I can return to it, to remind me of the details when I share my makes. If you do not need enabling then come back soon because I have a finished project to share... but keep reading to see some lovely things and get details of my machine quilting class 🧵

First up, look at these adorable individually wrapped needle minders - opening them was such a treat, like it was my birthday! I love this kind of personalisation and in her note she apologised for the puns but it made me chuckle.

stitching stash

03 January 2021

I recently got a few stitchy bits and bobs to help set me up for stitching projects this year. It's custom for me to share, mostly to document the details of things for my own record but also to give recommendations. I'd also love for you to share what items you have tried / use / love in the comments because there's nothing better than word of mouth!

First up is this lot from Lakeside Needlecraft. An 11" Q Snap frame, I already have an 8" that I love and I plan on having a couple of cross stitch projects on the go this year so another frame was needed. I went slightly bigger as I plan on using this for the Modern Folk Embroidery SAL. The silk thread is Waterlilies by Caron in #308 Italian Ice which I plan to use stitching another Modern Folk Embroidery pattern, on to the 32 Belfast Linen in Mushroom you see below. Finally I got some more Aida band because I love them and want to incorporate them into projects somehow, also I fancy making a bookmark.

People seem to rave about Tulip needles but I haven't tried them yet. I placed an order with Sew & Quilt for some Sashiko needles and Embroidery needles to test out, along with a cute pair of Tulip scissors. They have a sight curve on the tip so you can get nice and close when trimming threads.

I've been putting all my stitching projects for this year into bags and organising the patterns, fabric and thread so I am ready to stitch and switch between them as I please!

My quilty list has yet to be tackled but I do plan on making my way through old unfinished objects (again) this year!

What are your sewing plans for 2021?

kindness & fortitude

30 April 2020

Last year I chose a cross stitch pattern to work on throughout the year. This was started in January 2019 and finished in December 2019 (only just got round to properly blogging about it), 15605 crosses in total. Of course I worked on other things too during that time but it was lovely to have this project to pick up in between. It was serendipity because my word for 2019 was fortitude. Obviously it wasn't just the title of the pattern that drew me to it, it is full of beautiful Quaker motifs inspired by antique samplers. There is a delicacy to the unique design, a modern look to some of the geometric elements and some that remind me of quilts. The pattern is Kindness & Fortitude by Modern Folk Embroidery.

In a change from my usual style I went for a much more muted, calm palette of colours. I chose threads that were peachy/pink and then a variety of greens, mustard, browns and neutrals. It has a very natural vibe, which is what I wanted. Simple, pretty and serene.

scraps + stash

27 January 2019

I have had a little bit of a splurge, nothing crazy but there was fabric I really wanted and embroidery floss that is needed, along with a couple of other utility items for making. It's not all buying, though, as I recently used up scraps to make my first ever open wide pouch...

Sampler Threads by The Gentle Art from Lakeside Needlecraft

This thread is my second order from Lakeside Needlecraft, I adore the subtle tones of the gently over-dyed embroidery floss - Sampler Threads by The Gentle Art - and the colours are even prettier when stitched.

handmade : play : prepare

19 December 2018
handmade key ring with beads and jersey fabric

Creativity has been on my mind recently. The role it plays it my life, the way I use it... or sometimes chose to ignore it. How different types of sewing/crafting affect me. Wondering "what do I get from creating/sewing/hand stitching?" and "is it (the act of making/the product) meaningful?".

My mind fills up with these types of questions and I try to unpick how I'm feeling, to work through some things and get to a place of inspiration, motivation and satisfaction.

One of the best things to do when I'm in that state of mind is to follow Cheryl Arkison's Morning Make practice. To create something just for the process. It doesn't have to be a finish because it's the play that is important.

I had some neon pink jersey fabric (not sure why) and these beads, both from ebay and decided to make a key ring for myself. I had seen this key holder by Ina Seifart and thought I'd make my own version. A bit more rock and roll.

It was really calming; threading beads, knotting and creating.
