2017 Finish-A-Long ~ Meet the Global Host Team ~ Felicity

I am lucky enough to live in Naramata, British Columbia. It's a village of fewer than 2,000 people nestled on the Naramata Bench in one of Canada's fruit- and wine-producing regions, the Okanagan Valley.
As you can see, we're on the side of a lake, and it's a big tourist destination because our summer weather is hot and dry.
We moved to Naramata from Vancouver just over a year ago. After living for nearly 25 years in Vancouver, we grew tired of the traffic and the astronomical cost of living and decided to take a different approach to life. We couldn't be happier.
I quit my job in the financial services industry and now I work part time in a local quilt shop as a designer, teacher and retail associate. I also work from home as a training and development consultant. My husband was a stay at home dad in Vancouver and he also works part time here in the area.
I began quilting in 2000, shortly after I got married. My husband is the one who encouraged me to look for a beginner's class because I spent a lot of time looking at and admiring quilts in museums and at shows but I was too intimidated to try it myself. But boy am I glad I did. I knew from the first minute of that first class that this was going to be my thing.

2017...are you ready for a new year? A new year a new list!
As you are probably aware, the 2017 FAL is remaining global - a community of bloggers across the world, jointly hosting the FAL. Our hosts are:

For those of you who are new to the FAL, it is a place to find motivation and encouragement to complete those unfinished projects that are hanging about becoming UFOs. Every quarter you post a list of projects you hope to finish in the next three months, and then at the end of the quarter, you post a link from your blog, Flickr or Instagram of each successful finish from your original list.
Each finish is an entry for wonderful prizes from our sponsors.
There is no penalty for not finishing a listed project, so feel free to make your list long or short, as you wish.

As you may recall from last year, there was a return of tutorial week at the end of each quarter, between the opening of the link for finishes and the day that link closes. Are you enjoying this? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below! This will take place each quarter. Each host works hard to put these together so I hope you are visiting their blogs to encourage them.
If you have a tutorial that you would like to share, please let me or another host know.
It's time to round up those projects you want to finish over the next three months, take a photo of each one and make your list. Please ensure that you have at least started your projects - pulled fabric with a pattern or plan is not considered a UFO, and remember it is finished projects that will get you an entry toward the above listed prizes. So while we love to see your bee blocks, the "finish" is when they are a completed, usable project.
It is very helpful if you tag your list as #2017FALQ1yourname when posting on social media: Flickr, Facebook & Instagram. Using the same hashtag over the quarter when sharing progress or finishes before the link, helps the hosts find your original list quickly - especially when this is done over a 3 month period. IMPORTANT: Don't forget to link your finishes up when the quarter closes.
The 2017 Q1 link for your list of proposed finishes is now open below on my blog and on each of the hosting blogs. You need only link your list once, on one blog - and that link will show up on all of the blogs.
If you are using Facebook, Flickr or Instagram, link a mosaic and put your list in the description. Katy of The Littlest Thistle has a great tutorial on how to link-up if you need it.
We also ask that you become part of the FAL community. Please check out the links of others - visit and comment on their lists. We all need encouragement to get those finishes done, so please share some of your own too.
When creating your list there is one thing to remember....No deductions for not completing something so ..... Aim High! Nothing to lose!!!

get real ~ FAL Q4 2015
There are so many works in progress around here it's kind of ridiculous. For the last quarter of the finish-along I'm abandoning all those things I would like finished at some point and knuckling down to get the things I need done done!
1. Tote bag. So despite my declaration above, this doesn't have a deadline but I want to make it for myself using these yummy fabrics:
2. Next up is my project for the Halloween Haunts Blog Hop, which starts tomorrow! Mine involves this:
I'm not ready to attach that yet and I'm nervous I won't get it right! Wish me luck!
4. A quilt using these lovely fabrics:
5. A cozy cushion using Lori Holt's pattern from the Cozy Cottage 2016 calendar.
6. I've had an idea to make a pincushion using the crazy tiny liberty hexies I started working on forever ago and haven't touched since (just checked and they were on my FAL list last year)!
7, 8 and 9. Lastly but most important is #therearenowordsquilt for Nat. I am making one for her family and one for both sets of grandparents. So three quilts. There has been such a kind response to my call for blocks and I hope to have enough to complete all three. I've also had donations of wadding, fabric and help towards costs so I'm really grateful and will pour love into these quilts.
Stitchy Pie - embroidered sampler needle case
This is one of my favourite things I have made! I wanted to teach an embroidery class and it's always nice to have something useful at the end of a class and you learn a new technique. My inspiration was a folded fabric needle case I received in a swap a couple of years ago and thought it could be a great way to show off pretty stitches. *Edit - the needle case I was kindly given in the swap was made by Cara of Pink Stitches.
The stitches range from basic to slightly more complicated and are all stitches I love to use in my embroidery.
I chose a palette that feels quite folky, with a mix of subtle and bright colours. I used a combination of Aurifloss embroidery thread and perle cotton. The blue fabric reminded me of denim and the pop of the geo print from A Little Bird Told Me by Lewis and Irene makes me smile.
I added a magnetic fastener so it stays nice and secure when you're carrying it around and you can use the different sections to separate your needles. In mine I have written the various types of needles I use at the top of each section so I know which ones to use! You could even embroider them if you wanted to.

Butterfly Puzzle Quilt
I based this English Paper Pieced quilt on a geometric fabric print, after Nicky suggested it. The pattern was a bit of a puzzle to work out but I really enjoyed doing it. The mad mix of fabrics makes for a bright and cheery quilt and the Lizzy House Catnap print makes it a cute I-spy! You can see a list of the fabrics used here.
After considering some sort of straight line quilting I decided instead to do some random overlapping circles in various sizes. The quilt was pieced and quilted with 50 wt Aurifil.

Coloured Pencils Quilt
I finally have some finishes to show you! Over the next couple of days I'm going to share projects that I will be teaching as classes at Patchfinders in Poynton. The shop has moved premises and we are having our opening day tomorrow Tuesday September 1st. There are giveaway goodies too so come by if you can!
The first finish I have to share is this cute quilt I designed:
The quilt is perfect for children or artists! I quilted it with 12 weight Aurifil thread, to get those fun 'drawn' lines and to add texture to the pencils.
I really enjoyed making this quilt and hope others will too! My kids are absolutely in love with it and have asked that we can keep it after it's been displayed in the shop. The true seal of approval :)
The white Widescreen by Carolyn Friedlander fabric makes a great background and the black seemed perfect for the backing and binding:
