Star Crossed Moons Quilt
27 May 2016
Nothing beats a new, freshly washed and dried, crinkly and squishy quilt!
This quilt has a magical quality about it, to me it is like looking out at the universe.
The pattern is Star Crossed by It's Sew Emma, Fat Quarter Shop. The pattern has four quilt sizes but I chose to create a square quilt, it measures approx. 46" x 46". It's a beautiful pattern and clever in it's simplicity, there is a lot of scope for using prints to create different effects. When I finished the quilt it felt like there was just a bit too much black so I added in some appliqué moons made with Cotton + Steel metallic canvas.
The centre fabric is Shibuya in Linen, Tokyo Train Ride by Sarah Watts; the parallelograms are Lined Grids in White, Doe by Carolyn Friedlander and the background is Petite Plus, Black & White by Cotton + Steel.
I did a bit of machine quilting in black and added some hand quilting in white perle thread, which I also used to stitch the moons.
It doesn't bother me, I actually quite like it and chose to leave it in.

name cushion and corners
18 February 2016
A friend of mine recently commissioned an embroidered name cushion to give as a gift for a baby boy. I wanted to make something modern and not babyish - a cushion that can be used as he grows!
I ended up picking a lovely fabric stack with Architextures, Doe and Gramercy. It looked very beachy and calming to me.
I really enjoy embroidery and lettering is always fun. I ended up only using some of the prints I picked in the patchwork. The cushion inner was really puffy but it will flatten with a bit of use! I used Chris' brilliant tutorial for no more empty corners, it really did make a difference. I will be using it for all my cushions now!
Simple QAYG with a neutral variegated King Tut thread.
I also embroidered his middle name on the back of the cushion.
Thankfully mum was happy and my friend sent me a lovely picture of the baby next to his cushion, so cute!
This was not my usual choice of colours but I think this mix works so nicely. I love working on commissions because it makes me think differently and pick combinations I might not otherwise.

Occasionally there's a fabric line I can't wait to get my hands on and Good Hair Day by Kim Andersson is one of those! I'm trying to buy fabric with projects in mind, so I picked out these prints from Pink Castle Fabrics to add to my 1930's Farmer's Wife quilt:
top to bottom: Just A Trim in Cream, Good Hair Day by Kim Andersson; Bobby Pins in Blush, Good Hair Day by Kim Andersson and Ribbons and Bows in Night, Good Hair Day by Kim Andersson.
I love the retro vibe, fun theme and I'm now wishing I got some of the Up Do print!
Next up I got a lovely package from Brighton Sewing Centre, tied up with a pink bow. I added in the zips to get free postage and how fabulous is that gold one?!
fabrics top to bottom: Rainclouds in White, Rain or Shine by Stephanie Thannhauser; Ladder Lines in Black and White, Doe by Carolyn Friedlander; Weave in White, Doe by Carolyn Friedlander and Breeze in White, Doe by Carolyn Friedlander.
Today I received this gorgeous bunch of binding strips from the lovely Sarah to use for binding the quilts for Nat and her husband's parents:
I also received the latest copy of Simply Moderne, it's packed full of fabulous inspiration! I spotted some familiar faces and there's a great interview with Lee of Freshly Pieced.
There was some excitement today when one of Fred's front teeth finally fell out, I think the other one won't be too far behind!
There are lots of fabulous bargains to be had and fabric sales a plenty online, check out these great offers:

Star Crossed Blog Hop
20 May 2015
The latest pattern by Fat Quarter Shop and It's Sew Emma is the gorgeous, vintage-inspired Star Crossed and I'm sharing my progress for the Blog Hop.
I have decided to go with a monochrome version. It's not something I have ever done before and I thought it would suit the star pattern - like gleaming stars in the night sky. I also wanted to keep it modern. Those that follow me know I adore vintage (patterns and fabric) but I am working on a couple of other quilts with vintage fabrics so I needed a change. Cue some Cotton + Steel and Doe to make my Star Crossed Night Sky quilt:
Here's my first block finished and I have to say I love it even more than I thought I would!!
The centre fabric is Shibuya in Linen, Tokyo Train Ride by Sarah Watts; the parallelograms are Lined Grids in White, Doe by Carolyn Friendlander and the background is Petite Plus, Black & White by Cotton + Steel.
The Petite Plus fabric really makes the star pop and the white Doe print makes it look like a shining star. I'm excited to get this one finished!
It's Sew Emma patterns are always so well written and easy to follow. The Star Crossed pattern gives you the sizes to make a Lap, Twin, Queen or King size. It also has the requirements for one block so you could easily make a quilt to suit any size and even make coordinating cushions or other accessories from just one block.
You can get the Star Crossed pattern here or get an instant download PDF version here.

My make up needed a new home, somewhere I could chuck it after slapping it all on in the morning ;)
I wanted it to be easy to reach, easy to see and in something cute to look at. When I saw this Fabric Basket Tutorial by Amy Smart I knew it would be perfect.
Here's what I was using before, I never travel so it's just sad and I always had to pour everything out to find what I was looking for! (This isn't all my make up, I have draws and boxes full too - this is just the stuff I use most)
Now I have cute 80s kitties and fun geometric print to look at :) and another check off my Finish-Along list.
Fabrics from Miss Matatabi - Outside fabric: Love Cats by Lecien Retro Lining: Geometric Lines in pink (there are other colours available here)
I think this basket will make me smile in the morning!
I adore cute Japanese prints and you can get 30% off at Pink Castle Fabrics today (hurry! I stopped writing this so I could get my order in). Use code JAPAN30 Sorry the code has expired but you can see all in stock Japanese prints HERE.
We got the new Lewis and Irene range 'A Little Bird Told Me' in at Patchfinders, it's really pretty! I had to take some home with me:
Left to right: An older Hoffman print (not sure what it's called), Geo and Tea and Geo on Spring Yellow, A Little Bird Told Me by Lewis and Irene.
And I got some yummy fabrics from the Fat Quarter Shop for an upcoming project:
left to right: Linen Shibuya, Tokyo Train Ride by Sarah Watts; White Lined Grids, Doe by Carolyn Friendlander and Petite Plus, Black & White by Cotton + Steel
It was a bank holiday weekend here in the UK so I am enjoyed a nice long weekend with this wild bunch:
Hope you enjoyed your weekend too!
