Geo Diamond block 🌿 terrarium

04 February 2019

Geo Diamond quilt block made with Art Gallery Fabrics by Charm About You

As I was going through my stash to make this block inspiration struck. Isn't it funny how memories and things can suddenly come to mind and influence you. This wasn't my original direction but I am so pleased with how this came together!

The block is called Geo Diamond and designer Naomi Clarke has just launched the Geo Diamond English Paper Piecing Sewalong! Click the link to get all the details, parcels start shipping in March and there are lots of options available.

It's a 12" block, so a great size! There are loads of layout possibilities and it's even cooler to see it repeated. I really like sewing with larger pieces, not at all fiddly and the block was relatively quick to stitch. I always use Aurifil 50wt thread for English Paper Piecing.

I chose a selection of Art Gallery Fabrics for my block and I was drawn to the leaf prints. I kept thinking about a leaded glass terrarium my parents had. It had lots of angles, some green glass and it always puzzled me growing up how the plants got in there?! Turns out on one side there was a 'pane' missing to allow access (or maybe it opened I don't quite remember!). I couldn't find the exact one but it was a larger version, similar to the image below.

So my Geo Diamond is an ode to that terrarium. I used the metallic feather print, from Decadence by Katarina Roccella, in the centre because it felt opulent and pretty. I envision large terrariums being in some magnificent Victorian property full of velvet and dark wood... probably completely historically inaccurate but that's my imagination!

I like how the plants create a frame all around the block and I chose the fabrics to intentionally create a contrast of soft and bold. It has whimsy but also strength.

The two leaf prints I used are Lamina, Fusion Rainforest by A Collaboration of AGF Designers and Cadence Winds Oliva, Virtuosa by Bari J.

The three low volume prints I used, for the background and top of the triangle, let the 'terrarium' stand out and also give a sense of calm. I also like how modern they are, in contrast to what I see as a tradition from my childhood.

Those prints are Aerial Blush, Gathered by Bonnie Christine; Marked Sights, Craftbound by AGF Studio and Fair Peonies Traced, Decadence by Katarina Roccella.

In the bottom corners I fussy cut houses from The Gingerbreads Fondant, Little Clementine by AGF Studio. It seemed perfect as the terrarium was in the living room of the house I grew up in! I plan on making another block, perhaps continuing the theme or with a different memory. I love the repeat these blocks create but I'm so pleased with this one I might end up making a pair of cushions and let the blocks stand alone.

If you'd like to create your own blocks - CLICK HERE to visit Naomi's site for all the information about the Geo Diamond sewalong!

*** I am having a giveaway for a two month subscription of the Geo Diamond block of the month - open internationally, ends 12th February 2019 - go to THIS POST to enter!

seam ripper signs of the sewdiac samantha claridge

Every month I get the awesome subscription box Signs of the Sewdiac, it's a fabulous creative lifestyle box themed with Samantha Claridge's designs. This month is The Seam Ripper, the panel above is a kit to make a zip pouch and there's a patch, pin, holographic pencils, greeting card, print and a seam ripper! All gorgeous and I adore the design. I need to find a good place for the patch.

I have notebooks a plenty, I fill them with writing, ideas and sketches. I've saved all the ones that are full and I have a collection of blank ones waiting to be used. Many of them are different sizes but recently I bought some Field Notes memo notebooks, small enough to carry around and fill with whatever is in my head. It also means I can keep these specific notebooks for my creative ideas and they'll be easy to store once they are filled. Due to the fact that I am a lover of stationery and a 'planner addict', I know about the bullet journaling trend and have seen people use some beautiful covers to hold their journals. I knew this would be a great way to protect my notebooks and keep them together. The Foxy Fix is a simple leather cover with elastic strap, that can hold plenty of Field Notes notebooks. I got a small one but it can easily fit three notebooks in (probably more!).

This is the Boss Babe Single Couture in Moonlit with powder pink stitching and elastic. Of course I got embossing in rose gold too. It's so well made and one of those things that will get better with age as it softens and gets character from being thrown in my bag!

There's been lovely squishy parcels too, more new fabric arrivals. This is the stunning underwater and tropical collection Sirena by Jessica Swift for Art Gallery Fabrics

The leaf prints are so pretty in lovely bright colours, the focal mermaid print is so whimsical and the whales and octopi are SO cute!

Can we talk about these moons?!! Those adorable faces! Stargazer by AGF Studio is utterly adorable, with furry space friends and constellation / planet themed prints. AGF Studio are nailing it in my opinion, not only do they create excellent feature prints but they are amazing at designing really useful blender, neutral prints too. So even if you don't go for the childlike space prints, the Stardust, Lunar Stamps and Interrupted Signal prints are perfect stash builders and would look gorgeous mixed with other modern fabrics.

Both collections are available soon, visit Hantex to find UK stockists for fabrics in the ranges.

Finally I am working on a secret project with these incredible prints from the new Anna Maria's Conservatory by Anna Maria Horner, Monika Forsberg, and Bookhou. They are utterly stunning. I've already started cutting and I'm so excited to share this with you when I can!

I hope you all have a wonderful week and get to enjoy some sewing time!

incoming

01 July 2018
I've been keeping the post man busy recently and as a result I have lots of lovely fabric bundles to share! Some of these are new collections, there are non cotton fabrics and a few extras I couldn't resist...

This gorgeous bundle is the new Terrestrial collection by Sara Watson for Cloud 9 Fabrics. It's totally up my alley, the colours are stunning and the detail in the prints is just beautiful.  The black and white prints in the centre are canvas, so lots of possibilities for bag making etc!

More new fabric below, Gathered by Bonnie Christine for Art Gallery Fabrics is full of pretty florals, soft motifs and sweet text print. I think it has an excellent mix of feature prints and really useful blenders. It's great to be able to use a collection as a whole and still have variety but it's also nice to separate the prints and easily mix them with other ranges.

Gilmore Girls mug rug ☕

04 December 2016

Whether you are a fan of the show or not, this free pattern from Anorina at Samelia's Mum is adorable and you could easily add your own quote. I happen to love the show and the new series. I listen to the theme song Where You Lead by Carole King on every episode!

It was a lot of fun picking the fabrics. The soft Make Drafts, Maker by AGF Studio is a sweet cup and I tried to balance it with the bold Shadow Dot, Hadley by Denyse Schmidt, which also fits nicely with the coffee theme!

I enjoy doing embroidery and a little project like this is a nice quick make. I used two strands of Aurifloss #2530 and a simple backstitch for the text.

I added some hand quilting, steam coming from the cup and some little crosses to mimic the fabric print, using Aurifil 12wt #2021.

This is my first time doing reverse appliqué and, while it's far from perfect, I'm really pleased with it and definitely want to do more. I had no clue what I was doing so I used this Fons & Porter video tutorial to help me. I had the perfect brown Aurifil 50wt #1285 to do the top stitching. I did needle turn appliqué the cut out of the handle but it looked odd without the top stitching so I added it! It would be super quick to make this and just do raw edge appliqué but it was nice for me to try and challenge myself.

I loved Anorina's mug rug so much that I decided to add in some trim. I have a bag of it that someone gave me and is the perfect finishing touch!

Now I'm not sure I want to put my coffee on it so it might live on my bedside table instead!

19 February 2015
**GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED**

As promised I'm having a little giveaway to celebrate reaching over 1,000 followers on Bloglovin!

I would like to thank everyone who visits me here, reads about the projects I sew, follows my progress and quilting journey and takes time to comment. It means a lot to me. I adore this community, it provides me with so much inspiration and encouragement and also motivates me to challenge myself and keep on learning.

To show my appreciation I am giving away some of my stash and having two different giveaways! One here and one on Instagram. You probably know fabric and stationery are two of my favourite things so here's what you can win...

6 fat eighths of brilliant low volume prints - Triangularity Stardust, Chromatics by AGF studio; Sprinkled Morning, Meadow by Leah Duncan; Smile and Wave, Koi by Rashida Coleman Hale; Teensy Weensy Lotus, Littlest by AGF Studio; White Tint Dandelions by Santee; Linen Closet Bees by Makower, a fat quarter of Crystal Arrowheads, Arizona by April Rhodes and some fun glittery Hema stickers!

They really do make a beautiful bundle:

**GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED**

You have three possible chances to win:

1. Leave a comment telling me about the best party you have been to.
(my son chose this question, though his first try was to ask 'is your ear all right?', then 'is it 12 o'clock yet?' but then he picked this one and I think it's fun... oh he also asked whether you have bought him chocolate for his birthday?! Actually feel free to answer any of those)

2. Follow my blog and leave a separate comment letting me know you do (optional entry) - bloglovin / gfc / feedly / email - click one of those buttons on the right sidebar

3. Share this giveaway on twitter, facebook or your blog and leave another comment telling me how you shared (optional entry) - NB Instagram does not count since I am having another giveaway over there!

Please, please, please read those options carefully and if you are a 'no reply' blogger I am afraid I don't have time to hunt you down to tell you if you win so please leave an email address with your comment e.g. spongebob (at) yahoo (dot) com.

The giveaway is open worldwide, it ends 1st March 2015 and the winner will be chosen by random.org and announced here.

Good luck!

p.s. don't forget to check out my Instagram giveaway too :)
