round ~ le challenge ~ hot water bottle cover
14 February 2016
The theme for le challenge this month was round, I thought about making something round but I couldn't think of anything I really fancied making! What I did need was a new hot water bottle cover. After seeing Mary's versions I used Adrianne's tutorial to whip one up.
I needed to make it fit the theme - usually I use the theme as a starting point but sometimes you have to just figure out how to make it work! So I raided my scraps and picked out everything that had a dot or circle, because obviously they are round. I threw that little tape measure scrap in there too because I love it!
I made up two panels (the tutorial uses one but this works) with Amanda Jean's scrap vortex tutorial. Most of my scraps were more like strips but I didn't want to bother cutting them all up smaller and I like how it worked out. I quilted the panels with my favourite cross hatching using Aurifil 12 wt thread.
All these fabrics have memories of other projects and I like seeing them all together! It's slightly mad and there was no coordinating of fabrics, other than the round shapes.
Once I had finished I decided to add a little hand quilting to the top rather than top stitching. I love the shape of the hot water bottle, it's easy to turn down the opening to fill it up. I folded the hot water bottle into thirds vertically to get it in and there was a little jiggling to get it into place. I'm not sure how easy it would be to get it back out though, mine's pretty snug! It's been cold so I'm using it every night and love it!
Wishing you all a warm, love filled Valentine's Day!
Head over to le challenge to see other round makes and link up your 'round' themed makes for a chance to win!
There will be a new theme announced tomorrow and I think it's a brilliant one so make sure you check it out!
I'm also linking up to Scraptastic Tuesday because scraps!
Coloured Pencils Quilt
31 August 2015
I finally have some finishes to show you! Over the next couple of days I'm going to share projects that I will be teaching as classes at Patchfinders in Poynton. The shop has moved premises and we are having our opening day tomorrow Tuesday September 1st. There are giveaway goodies too so come by if you can!
The first finish I have to share is this cute quilt I designed:
The quilt is perfect for children or artists! I quilted it with 12 weight Aurifil thread, to get those fun 'drawn' lines and to add texture to the pencils.
I really enjoyed making this quilt and hope others will too! My kids are absolutely in love with it and have asked that we can keep it after it's been displayed in the shop. The true seal of approval :)
The white Widescreen by Carolyn Friedlander fabric makes a great background and the black seemed perfect for the backing and binding:
I will be teaching my Coloured Pencils Quilt class on Friday 9th October, all the details of my classes will be posted HERE. See the Patchfinders website for a list of all the classes and how to book.

it's all good in the sewing department
29 July 2015
Seems like having a deadline is working for me. I finished, quilted and bound my epp project. The reveal will be when my class is scheduled :)
I also finishing piecing another top for teaching, which I have now quilted in Aurifil 12wt. (with 50 wt. in the bobbin). I LOVE how this looks! I just have to finish burying all the threads, I use a self threading needle for that job and it makes it so easy.
As a reward for my progress I picked up my green tea and sweet beans and started on this basket block:
It's normal to reward good sewing with more sewing right?!

This week I received some fabulous exclusive Fat Quarter Shop Aurifil Thread Boxes from the Fat Quarter Shop. I always use 50 weight Aurifil for piecing and love the 12 weight for hand quilting. I haven't tried the AuriFloss yet so I'm excited to use it! The boxes are a great way to get a variety of colours, there are four colourways: Macaroon and Tart are gorgeous and have really pretty colours, Biscotti has lovely warm neutrals and browns, while Scone has a deliciously rich selection. Tough to chose between them for a favourite!
Family life has taken priority and I haven't had as much time to sew this week but I know these will get my sewjo going once I get a chance!
Today I went to visit my Nan and I admired this lovely vintage basket, in total grandmother fashion she insisted I took it home with me and I didn't argue! I love it and will probably fill it with fabric :)

Bees of a Feather quilt and a GIVEAWAY!
21 February 2014
**The giveaway is now closed**
Ta Dah!
Here is my Bees of a Feather quilt:
Ok these are clearly not the grand reveal photos I was hoping for. No that's my 6' tall husband standing on a ladder after it totally poured with rain and was rather windy!
I did get some pictures earlier in the week before I washed the quilt. I snuck into my neighbours garden and threw it over their big fence and then their slightly worse for the weather shed!
The quilt measures approximately 85 x 100" and is VERY hard to take a nice picture of in winter, in the wet, in my little suburban house with a rubbish camera. So forgive me and I hope you gain some sense of its magnificence!
The feather block is from this Anna Maria Horner pattern.
This quilt would simply not exist without the help of two very wonderful groups of ladies. My Scrappy? Sew Bee It! bee made me the first round of feathers back in October 2012 and then the Bee A Brit Stingy crew made me another set in January 2013. They did a fantastic job and I love having a quilt made by friends that have taught me so much and really inspired me.
Thank you to Annika, Carla, Catherine, Charlotte, Christiane, Collette, Deborah, Debra, Di, Emily, Erin,
Helen, Jan, Janet, Janine, Jeanne, Jess, Jodi, Karen, Lisa, May, Nicky (twice!), Rosa, Sana and Sheila for making the feather blocks and making it such a special quilt. Honorary thanks to Helen for her always excellent advice.
| there's another row on the other side of the fence! |
I had a lot of fun piecing the feathers, though at times it was like a puzzle. I added some low volume prints here and there to make the rows the same size.
The back was done 'jelly roll race' style with wide strips of prints I love that I cut from stash. A couple of these prints were given to me by other friends so it's nice to include them.
Thankfully I was able to use the fusible wadding to baste the quilt, I wouldn't have enough pins and just couldn't face anything else! It worked like a dream, has been through the wash and is lovely and crinkly soft. I would definitely use it again and for those that hate basting you should give it a go.
I hand quilted with Aurifil 12wt cotton in 4241 for the stems and 2214 (a gorgeous deep golden colour) around the feathers. I used a milliners needle and had no problem hand quilting the fusible wadding with the thicker thread.
Since the weather is still miserable and cold this will keep us snug on top of the duvet and brighten up our bedroom. Another check off my FAL list :)
**GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED**

I love a fun quilting project.
It started with this fabulous cheater quilt print by Cynthia Frenette.
I initially thought about hand quilting it but with so many other projects on the go I decided to machine some concentric circles to echo the background design on the fabric.
I quilted round the heart and then drew round a plate to get my first circle. I used my quilting guide and walking foot to echo the circle.
I found I had the perfect thread in one of my Aurifil sampler packs. I'm trying to use these in different projects, it is really great trying the different weights. I used the variegated 12wt cotton #4648. It was fabulous in my machine and I used my usual 50wt Aurifil in the bobbin and the back looks great too!
I chose to do a solid scrappy binding and I think it works really well. I used Silent Cinema by Jenean Morrison on the back, as I had some left over from the Owl Love You quilt.
