Giant Chevron Quilt and a GIVEAWAY!

08 November 2013
**Giveaway now closed**

I showed you this lovely stack of fabric a while ago and now it has become this...

A Giant Chevron Quilt using the fantastic new pattern by Jess at The Eleven Garden.

I used rainbow colours from my stash and a range of low volume prints.

I did straight line quilting with Aurifil 50wt 2610, a nice light grey. For the backing I used a lilac vintage sheet.

The binding is a great print from Modern Yardage, the fabric is so soft and easy to work with.

This quilt is a gift for a friend, a check off my FAL list and one of my Making Christmas goals!
I was testing the lap quilt pattern so this is what it looked like at that size but I added extra rows to make it into a giant bed size quilt (my friend and her husband are both really tall!)

Luckily Jess has done all the hard work and the pattern includes three sizes: baby, lap and twin size. It also has a blank colouring page so you can plan your layout, very helpful!

The Giant Chevron Quilt pattern is available from Craftsy and Etsy.

Jess is kindly letting me give away 2 copies of the pattern to 2 lucky winners!
You each have two chances to win (please leave a separate comment for each entry):

GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED

1. Leave a comment on this post, you could tell me what size you would make and what fabric you would use to make a Giant Chevron quilt.

2. Share this giveaway - facebook, IG, pin, tweet, blog - and leave another comment

No reply bloggers will NOT win so please leave your email address in the comments.
The winners will be chosen by random.org and announced on Monday 11th November.

Then head over to Jess' pattern release post to see other versions of the quilt and more chances to win as each blogger will be having giveaways of the pattern!

Good Luck!

don't need no credit card to ride this train

07 November 2013

Times are hard for some of us and money is tight but I heard this on the radio the other day and it really made me smile.

So I had to share this YouTube video and I EMPLORE you to watch it. A couple of reasons why:

1. It's a great feel good song. I'm not a big fan of 80s music and I probably love it because of Back To The Future but even so it is just awesome!

2. Live is better than the recorded version, though that's good too.

3. The bands hair. Seriously 80s! And that's enough to make you smile laugh.

4. Guitar solo looks cleverly like Michael J. Fox's in the above mentioned film.

5. Huey dancing, the band dancing, you'll be dancing!

6. One guy in the band actually looks like Zoot from The Muppets.

colour baby

06 November 2013

Today I've been doing some straight line quilting on my embroidered alphabet quilt using my Aurifil cone. It really works well and it is so easy to set up.

Just make sure you keep the CD spool over to the far right rear of your machine to avoid knocking it over like I did!

I also trimmed my new rainbow log cabin blocks and I like this arrangement:

For both of these quilts I want to use a black and white stripe binding because it works so well and is a great way to showcase the quilt and colours. I found a nice deal on this striped cotton (code PC260-79) from Chawlas - only £4.49 a metre and it is good quality with a nice feel too. * A tip - the website pictures don't necessarily show all the colour options so you need to check the options in the colours selection box. I will let you know how it works for the binding once I've sewn it on.

I made my October bee blocks for Erin using this tutorial - they were fun and easy, sorry they are late Erin they will be in the post tomorrow!

havin' it large

05 November 2013

No I haven't been out raving (ahh the good old Sankeys days) but I have hooked up my cone of Aurifil using this simple tutorial.

It's worked brilliantly for piecing and I will be testing it for quilting tomorrow.

I got my Aurifil 50 wt cone in 2021 from Fluffy Sheep Quilting and her prices mean it is better value than buying individual spools. I know the spools last for ages so it'll be interesting to see how much sewing I get done with this. Maybe check with me in a year?!

Hope those of you in the UK had a fun Bonfire Night! I've been enjoying writing my name with sparklers!

Minerva Crafts haberdashery winner!

04 November 2013
The winner of £20 worth of haberdashery from Minerva Crafts is...

Congratulations Mel, I'm sending you an email!

Thanks again to Minerva Crafts for the giveaway and remember you can get 10% off your orders with the code CHARM10.

It's been a long, hard day. We're all full of horrible winter colds and the kids were super tired after school. The baby has been extremely unhappy and not feeding or eating well. She had half an hours nap and that was the only peaceful time all day.

She is super cute even with that red nose! The patchwork quilt I made with a vintage sheet kit from Mary Emmens kept her snuggly.

Hope you're all managing to stay cold free :)

Crafty Magazine - Issue 8

03 November 2013

I get inspiration from everywhere but I do love curling up with a good magazine. I subscribe to Crafty Magazine because it is my monthly treat and it's one magazine guaranteed to inspire me, as it did recently when I made my High Voltage lampshade. I like the range of crafts it covers (without being too broad), the style and tone, and also the little fact that it's created where I was born (big up Stockport!).

Here's a glimpse of the goods available in Issue 8, out November 7th:

Gorgeous woodland creatures

Frida Kahlo Embroidery

Awesome cross stitch Day of the Dead jewellery

Love these beautiful cushions

I can't really knit but I so want these socks!

This is just a snippet of some of my favourites and there are plenty more projects to make and inspire you.
There's always interesting interviews and articles too and I would recommend it for a Crafty read!

Check out the Crafty Magazine website for subscriptions (currently 3 issues for £5!) and stockists.

a sense of control in a world full of chaos

01 November 2013

All in all October was a good sewing month. In other ways it has been hard but I've realised just how important sewing, quilting, crafting and designing have become to me. It is my time, my way of blocking everything else out. My way of creating, doing things I want and I'm in control of it. There are so many things I can't control but the fabric, needle and thread are in my hands.

Too Far Quilt, custom cushions available in my Etsy shop, rose star block, High Voltage lampshade, Skull decoration, applique zip bag.

Hoping for a very creative November and to continue to find my sewing joy.

There's still a couple of days left to enter my giveaway and win yourself some haberdashery from Minerva Crafts!
