fools rush in
24 January 2014
I had some fun with applique and made these two Kawaii fox cushions - with a pocket for treasures or the tooth fairy. I sketched out a little fox design and split it down into the necessary applique pieces, then got to stitching...
This one I just went fmq mad, I did some outline stitching and then completely embroidered the eyes and nose by stitching round and round and all messy, it was very enjoyable!
The next one I used zig zag applique for a softer, totally different look. I hand embroidered the eyes, mouth and some decorative grass and clouds. I added a sweet button nose.
I made them towards the end of last year and submitted them to a magazine competition but I didn't win. I did feel foolish for a little while (no acknowledgement, no feedback) but actually I am really pleased with them and had fun using different techniques. I'm hoping that a lovely buyer on my Etsy shop will agree they are pretty special and give them a happy home.
Then last week I had a true reason to feel foolish when I rushed in to make a start on a needle turn applique block for the butterfly quilt. I felt quite confident and it wasn't going too badly, until I had this and I couldn't get past thinking I was doing something wrong...
Yes because the flowers are supposed to be in the corners - I'm doing a variation of the one below. I had traced it all wrong and have now started over, at least I had a little practice before starting the 'real' block!

Indiana Rose Quilt Block by Carrie Hall |
Finally after showing you my Polar Bear Block the other day I kept getting that nagging 'you haven't pre-washed your red fabrics' feeling and because a few of you commented about it I threw my pile of red fabrics for the QAL in the wash. After all this is red and WHITE. I don't normally pre-wash at all but the last thing I want is to ruin a quilt when it's done and that little bit of preparation really didn't take much time. Thanks to Linda for our little email conversation and I will be soaking this block just to be sure too. I'm going to make this one as foolproof as I can!

owl have some confidence!
13 July 2013
The PTA fair went pretty well yesterday. We had fun and I sold a lot of my smaller items and two tooth cushions, including the one on the left below!
I finished these this week and I've listed the yellow owl on my Etsy shop.
These make great gifts for kids and who doesn't love a cute owl?! This is another finish off my FAL list.
Perhaps the best thing was the lovely compliments I got on my makes and it gave me the confidence to open an Etsy shop, something I've wanted to do for a while. I ran with it and opened it last night - huge thanks to my blogging friends that have already shown their support :)
I'd love you to visit me there:

that's better
28 June 2013
Following my recent quilt disaster I returned to sewing only things I love.
Last night I finished off these owl tooth cushions for the PTA sale. I'm pleased with how they turned out. I did applique, fmq and a little hand stitching outlining the owls.
I based the design of the owls on the backing fabric below left.
I'm going to do a couple more I think because they are so cute and fun to make!
I finished June from my woodland sampler.
Yesterday afternoon Fred and I decided to work together to fix a rip in his jeans. After seeing this post by Toni - that I bookmarked forever ago - I knew that was the most fun fix! He cut the felt and I did the stitching (it was a little awkward because they are skinny jeans!)
Finally I managed (just in time) to do my last bee block this month. It's for Diane in the Simply Solids bee. She asked for any star in a star block so I made the 'star within a star' block by Brioni Greenberg from the Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters book. It worked out so well although because of the grey days what looks like blue here is actually more of a purple but you get the idea:

Skull cushion tutorial
25 March 2013
A couple of people have asked me if they could make my skull tooth fairy cushions for their children, so to make it easier I've made a pattern and a tutorial for you to follow. I also made this one for my son in the process!
Here's what you'll need, along with your sewing machine and thread obviously:
skull pattern print out
one 12x12" piece of fabric for the front
one 12x12" piece of fabric for the back
approximately 10x5" plain white/neutral fabric for the skull
a small piece of fusible interfacing and bondaweb for the pattern pieces
two 11.5x11.5" fusible fleece (or wadding)
stuffing (I used as much as I could get in!)
To begin print out the skull pattern. It should print in landscape. If you download it the dimensions will change, although this is not really an issue and you can make the skull as little or large as you like by playing with your printer settings.
Please let me know if you have any issues accessing or printing it.
Cut out both of the pattern pieces.
Cut out the sections marked with an 'X' for the eyes and nostrils.
Trace round the skull top onto the back (paper side) of the bondaweb and cut it out (do not cut the eyes or nostrils of the bondaweb).
Cut a piece of fusible interfacing the same size as the skull jaw (bottom part of the pattern).
Following the manufacturers instructions attach the bondaweb skull and piece of jaw interfacing to the plain fabric:
Now you can cut out the eyes and nostrils. I use my embroidery scissors for this as those little nostrils can be tricky:
Take the jaw and fold over the top 1/4", press and topstitch:
Grab your two pieces of 12x12" fabrics. If you are using fusible fleece follow the manufacturers instructions and attach to the back of both pieces of fabric (if you want to quilt these do it now!).
Centre your skull on your front piece of fabric:
Put the jaw piece to one side, peel the backing off the bondaweb on the skull top and follow manufacturers instructions to attach it by pressing to the fabric:
Now applique the skull top. I chose to fmq round the outside edges twice, I like the rustic look but you could also use a straight stitch or blanket stitch.
Take the jaw piece and press the sides and bottom over 1/4":
Pin the jaw in place under the skull top:
Stitch round the sides and bottom of the jaw close to the edges (do not sew the top!! It's a pocket!).
Take your back piece of fabric and the front of the cushion, put them right sides together and pin in place :
Sew round all the edges of the cushion but remember to leave about a 4" gap at the bottom for turning and reverse stitch at the beginning and end of your sewing.
I like to strengthen the corners by stitching across them and then clip them for neater corners:
Turn your cushion right side out through the opening. Then give the cushion a good press, especially at the opening - it makes it easier to sew it shut:
Stuff the cushion and then sew the opening closed. I hand sew the opening using a ladder stitch.
And your cushion is done!
My son was thrilled with his.
I hope you liked the tutorial and it was all clear. Any questions please let me know!
I'm happy for you to make them for personal use and gifts but please do not sell my design or pattern.
If you make the cushion or any items using my tutorials please tag me on social media @charmaboutyou
I would love to see your makes!
more tooth fairy cushions
15 March 2013
I have been tinkering away and recently made these tooth fairy cushions for my son's friend's birthdays.
The first is a design I've done before:
The mouth of the skull is a pocket for the tooth or any other treasures in the meantime!
The second one was fun to design and I am addicted to this type of applique. It is so easy and quick.
I made the car front windscreen the pocket for the tooth:
I did some fmq and stitched a 5 onto the bonnet. I used a funky stitch on my machine to make the tyre tracks of the racecar. I'm usually such a stickler for following patterns but I think I might be doing some more of this type of thing because it allows me to just go with whatever comes into my imagination, use up scraps and they are quick projects that make nice gifts.
Happily both the boys love their new cushions!
These were waiting on my FAL list so it feels good to have checked another one off!
Again I felt the yellow didn't stand out that much so I outlined in green:
I have collaborated with Nat to create a fun new blog with a monthly challenge and link party with giveaways!
I know many of you have been eagerly awaiting this first month's theme for Le Challenge... well it is GEOMETRICS. Check out the blog for more information and have fun crafting! I can't wait to see what everyone makes and how you interpret the theme :)
