baby at play quilt
17 November 2017
Most of my friends have had babies and lots of quilts were made! So when I know someone that's having a baby, I love the opportunity to make a baby quilt as a gift. At work one of the cameramen told me his wife was expecting and I asked if they would like a quilt and what colours they would want it...
Grey, pink and yellow and I think it's a lovely combination!
This was a nice stash buster and a good chance to use some of my favourite scraps in a pretty layout. I created six large log cabin blocks. Rather than use equal widths or measure the lengths, I sorted the fabrics into short/medium/long lengths and just trimmed them as necessary while piecing.
After piecing the blocks together the proportion of the quilt wasn't right and so I cut it down, creating rectangles top and bottom. I like the asymmetry it creates and am pleased with the finished quilt. It is bound with a geometric print because there are quite a lot of florals in the top and it gives it a modern look, plus it was the right colour palette!
make music wherever you go ~ guitar baby quilt
14 April 2017
When I saw the Fat Quarter Baby book I knew I was going to make the 'Kevin' quilt for my sister and brother in law (who loves playing guitar). At that point she wasn't even pregnant but I could have given it to them for the cat. Earlier this year, however, my sister gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and so I had a reason to finish the quilt, which I gifted last week. Prepare to be bombarded with baby cuteness...

Happily her parents love the quilt and it's currently in her cot :)
pencil ✏ pens and quilt labels
27 August 2016
I may have mentioned it before but I have big love for stationery! Depending on my mood it's a close call between stationery and fabric as my favourite thing. There is joy in using quality pens and pencils, especially in my sewing projects. Today I am sharing some of the uni-ball range and showing you how I have been using them.
The Shalaku mechanical pencil is the most comfortable pencil to use with a really cool button on the side to easily adjust the lead, a nice grip and a clear fine line.
I have been using it for hand piecing and it draws so smoothly on fabric! I usually use a washable ink fabric pen but I am converted to the pencil side now. It also can be used for marking out appliqué shapes and I noticed how well it blends in when I did some needle turn appliqué.
Next I wanted to experiment with using uni-ball Pin drawing pens on fabric because they have fade and water resistant ink.
I used the Pin 03 to create a label for my latest mini quilt and tested by writing it out once and going over it, then another one (after messing up!) which I went over twice. So on the left pictures below it was written once but the 'I' twice and on the right pictures it was written three times.
After a run through the washing machine while it was still wet (at this point I was worried!!):
Dry and much improved! There is still a bit of bleed but the words written once or twice were fine. I think writing your label and then going over the letters once is perfect, three times is too much ink!
Next up I had some crafting fun with the kids using Posca markers.
We had a couple of different sizes and colours to play with and they draw beautifully, I especially like the metallic ultra fine Posca markers. They also wash off easily, which is fantastic when you have three kiddos making all kinds of mess!! My children love Posca markers because they aren't 'kids' pens and they like to be proper artists.
I tried them out on glass and enjoyed experimenting, super easy to clean up your design or wipe it all away with a baby wipe.
It takes some work to get the colour distributed how you want and build up layers but there's loads of scope for being really creative and personalising glasses and mugs and more!
For me I am definitely sticking to using uni-ball pens and pencils for sewing, writing and designing projects. The Shalaku mechanical pencil is a favourite and the uni-ball Pin fine line pens are welcome additions to my sewing arsenal!
Uni-ball kindly sent me these items to review on my blog, all opinions and times spent crafting with abandon are my own.
The uni-ball products mentioned are available in the UK at most supermarkets, WHSmith, Ryman, online from Cult Pens or to buy online from Amazon click here.
sweet sweet Sunday
10 April 2016
Some lovely fabric packages arrived this past week!
Miss Matatabi on Etsy has the most gorgeous selection of Japanese fabrics. I was definitely in a cute vintage mood when I bought these:
Fancy Circle in Grey by Yuwa; basic repro patch and sewing notions
Red cheater print by Suzuko Koseki; Blue tape measures by Suzuko Koseki; Vintage Daisies by Kei and Vintage Sewing Fashion by Suzuko Koseki.
More sweetness - especially these adorable ladies! - from Fat Quarter Shop:
Cocoa Buttercup, 30's Playtime by Chloe's Closet; Pink Native, Wander by Joel Dewberry; Ladies Night, Black and White by Cotton & Steel; Bowties, Black and White by Cotton & Steel and Disco Fruit, Black and White by Cotton & Steel
Wild Goose with black spots, Just A Speck by Jen Kingwell; Rock Salt with black spots, Just A Speck by Jen Kingwell; Cassette Tapes by Timeless Treasures; Taupe Ombre, Ombre by V and Co. and White on Red, Cross Weave by Moda
I literally only needed the ombre!! Oh well :)
This sweet little cross is from Ransom Jewelry, it's so dainty! I really like the black cross with the gold chain and it will be an everyday necklace for me. The shop has great customer service, Erica was really helpful when I had a question, and her shop is filled with striking and simple jewellery.
In life news, my cousin has had a baby girl! I embroidered a quilt label with her name and date of birth using perle thread and sent the quilt off today. I also made them a card by printing these free gift tag printables on card, cutting one out and stitching it to the front of a blank card. I think it turned out pretty cute!
'tis the season
18 December 2013
for utter panic. The realisation you might need to go to plan B. Not everything is going to get made/sewn in time.
I'm embracing plan B. I'm going to do what I can and only what I want.
So this little project can go to hell!
If anyone managed to make this without getting glue everywhere and sticking their fingers together and actually made it work I doff my hat to you, you're a better crafter than I am. I will not attempt a small frame purse using oilcloth ever again.
After that annoying failure I relaxed by making an embroidered label for a commissioned baby quilt.
Ahh feeling better already, then on to some fun but necessary sewing last night - I will show you the results tomorrow...
And finally a bit of time spent back with my true love, hand quilting my feather bee quilt. Only two more feathers to outline and then on to the stems.
Now I feel jolly :)
Spinning Stars
07 September 2012
I made this quilt for one of my favourite couples new baby boy. They are dear friends and I wanted to make them something special. She gave me a gorgeous bundle of fabric to work with and I chose this fabulous Anna Maria Horner pattern, which I kept a surprise. I handed it over last weekend and I'm pleased they loved it! My friend is a very talented knitter so I know she appreciates hand made.
This is the very first quilt I've hand quilting and I loved every minute. I used Anchor pearl cotton and used quite large stitches to outline the circles and star shapes. I adore the look it gives the quilt.
I had a good friend make me the templates, since I knew I'd want to make it again (she actually makes the most amazing jewellery, check out Wonderhaus). I used Lynne's awesome tutorial to get the points matching nicely. I made a label and attached it with a blanket stitch.
I almost called this quilt 'The one I didn't want to give away' but my husband nixed that idea. Seeing their gorgeous baby made me feel glad to make them something so special :)
As if by magic, Katy is currently having a Spinning Stars QAL so if you want to make one of your own hop over and join in!
There's a lot of lovely inspiration over on the Flickr group and it's always nice to be able to ask questions as you go along.
This is also the baby quilt listed on my FAL post so that's another one checked off!
