Moroccan and Maple Leaf Quilts

30 August 2018

It's back to work around here and, before I shower you with talk of the new makes, I want to share these quilts I made earlier this month. These featured as part of a 'trip around the world' theme on Sewing Quarter.

This design has a Moroccan tile influence, the colours and patterns give a rich jewel vibe too. The pops of pink add another dimension and create an interesting pattern themselves. It's a simple block I created using Creative Grids rulers. An important step in my quilt making process is to lay out all the blocks before piecing them together. With this quilt I rotated and moved the blocks around to create different looks. In the end I chose to have the corner blocks turned, it made interesting waves in the background.

The focal prints are Avalon by Joel Dewberry and I really like the mix of floral and geometrics, striking but also gentle.

The quilting emphasises the diamond pattern - straight line and cross hatch quilting with Aurifil thread. It's such a satisfying quilting pattern! Seeing those lines cross and meet. I always use my hera marker for this type of quilting, you can see my tips for cross hatch quilting here.

And, always a favourite for me, a Maple Leaf quilt. This one has such pretty colours, ranging from light pink to brown. Made with batiks, not my usual style, but the effect is super pretty! I don't pre-wash fabric but I always warn people to wash batiks (and vintage fabrics) carefully because they are notorious for colour bleed. I should have heeded my own advice because as I pressed the blocks I used some steam/spray of water and my ironing board now has red marks on it as a reminder!

I'm also obsessed with the border print, a great wood print by Lecien. It gives the quilt such a homely, rustic feel.

It's back to school next week, we are making the most of the days we have before the regular routine returns. Today we went to visit my Dad, had lunch and went picking blackberries. We actually did that a couple of weeks ago but now there were more ripe ones! We've come home armed with bags of berries, along with fresh veg from his garden. It really does taste so different from regular supermarket produce. I wish I had green fingers (or an inclination to want to garden!) because it would be lovely for us to grow our own. But then I've got even more reason to visit haven't I?! And I think I'll stick to sewing! Tonight I finished binding another quilt and so there will be more finishes to share with you soon.

⌘ A Piece of Me Pouch pattern ⌘

04 July 2017

At the beginning of the year I made these curved bottom padded zip pouches (born out of forgetting to measure twice and cut once while making my Everything in It's Place Bag). Not wanting this gorgeous fabric and my quilting to go to waste, I decided to use as much of the panel as I could and I ended up with two zip bags that I love! I tried a different way of attaching the zips (the lace one isn't so neat, I wouldn't suggest it for this) and I have finally written up a pattern so you can make your own.

The A Piece of Me pouch idea came to be after finding it makes such a difference for me to use things that make me smile and that mean something. I had the idea of embroidering this lyric onto a pouch, in remembrance of a friend. When I see the words, I sing the song and have great memories.

I encourage you to do the same, whether it be for yourself or for a gift; make it personal in some way, positive and meaningful 💖

I taught the A Piece of Me pouch at the Simply Sew'In retreat and the class all made gorgeous versions! Click here to read more and see details.

Adding the zip is really straightforward, there are tips in the pattern to keep it neat and the bias binding is a perfect finish.

The embroidery is optional and the pouch is brilliant either way! You can do some simple quilting or go to town with free motion quilting, you can make a patchwork piece for the outer panel or keep it plain. A Piece of Me pouch comes together quickly and it's up to you to add the details! The finished size of the pouch is approximately 10.5" x 7".

Click the link below or visit my Etsy shop to purchase the A Piece of Me pouch pattern. The PDF pattern is instantly downloadable after you complete your purchase.

happy stitching progress

18 February 2015

I finished my hexagon panel for the Green Tea and Sweet Beans quilt, I decided to English Paper Piece this panel because I'm faster at it and it is easier to get all those neat points!

I love the totally random (yet lovingly chosen) mix of fabrics:

I also completed all the Orange Peel blocks:

I'm so happy I decided to mix the modern fabrics with the 30s repro ones, I really love how they play together!

modern fabric bundle ~ giveaway ~

08 December 2014
**GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED**

My stash is superabundant and so it seemed right to share it and join the Sew Mama Sew giveaway day!

I created a modern bundle of fabrics to giveaway that I think you'll love. There are bright fun prints, low volume and stash blenders.

I know you're probably all hopping around so I won't go into too much detail about what is there but the bundle includes a couple of FQs and plenty of scraps - all a useable size (though many have pieces cut out, it is my stash after all!). They are unwashed designer quilting cottons (two are cotton/linen blends).

Let's break it down a bit...

So do you fancy helping me decrease my stash and using these lovelies in your handmade projects?

*SORRY GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED*

To enter:

- Leave a comment letting me know your best dance move or what dance you'd love to be able to do.
I like to shake my stuff in the kitchen while I'm cooking and cleaning but there probably isn't a word for that dance other than the 'mum dance' even though I think I'm Beyonce ;) I would love to be a fabulous tap dancer like Ann Miller (if you don't know who she is, check this out!).

- Followers of my blog get an extra entry, just leave a second comment telling me how you follow (blogger, GFC, a reader, email etc).

Please leave your email address in the comment to be sure I can contact you, no reply bloggers have been picked as the winner before and lost out because I can't get in touch with them! No reply bloggers/comments will not win.
The giveaway is open internationally and will close on Saturday 13th December, the winner will be chosen by random.org and announced here on that day.

The winner was announced here.

Alphabet embroidered quilt

29 November 2013

I am really proud of this quilt. It took me a while to decide what to do with those cute bear, alphabet and number panels but a little bit of embroidery and some bright modern fabric makes for an adorable baby quilt!

I used different stitches to highlight details on each letter block.

Of course there's a 'Q' quilt!

mmm french knot cherries!

I did straight line quilting with my trusty cone of Aurifil 50wt in 2021.

The quilt is for sale in my Etsy shop.

I used different bold modern fabrics and dots and the backing is Riley Blake, Apple of My Eye - I really love that print! The black and white stripe binding worked perfectly.

Don't miss out - check out this post for a great discount at Fluffy Sheep Quilting until 31st Nov!

bear paw block tutorial

10 June 2013

Here's a quick tutorial to show how I make bear paw blocks...

Paw fabric: cut one 5" square and one 5 3/4" square
Background fabric: cut one 5" square and one 3 1/16" square

The reason these measurements are a little 'odd' is because I wanted to make half square triangles (HSTs) the easy way and it just was simplest to start with 5" squares for me. It does mean you can use charm squares but beware that you need a bigger square of fabric for the largest part of the paw. The block will end up (a very random) 8 1/4" but I'm doing a whole quilt of them so it doesn't matter much. It wouldn't be too hard to resize.

Start by putting the 5" squares right sides together and sewing 1/4" around all the edges, then cut on the diagonal both ways so you end up with 4 HSTs.

Open out and press the HSTs. Layout your block with the squares. Here's is a guide for how to assemble the block:

It is made of two parts (shown by the dotted white line) that you then sew together.

To make sure the seams match nicely press the two sections in different directions and butt the seams together:

Press the seams of the HST blocks towards the 'paw fabric' and press the joining seams open to reduce bulk.

So that's my method. Once you've done a couple you can chain piece the different sections.

It's a little addictive! Happy sewing!
