Let's fly, let's fly away - butterfly & map quilt
25 February 2018
Two quilts that both have a flying theme today! One literally has wings and the other is a map of the world. To add detail I used decorative stitches on my machine, something I am exploring more and more and have a lot of fun with. Both projects were demonstrated on Sewing Quarter.
I created a butterfly mini quilt, a smaller version of a pattern from the book 'Log Cabin Variations' by Annies. The butterfly shapes were easy to appliqué with bondaweb and then stitched by machine with a blanket stitch and a satin stitch.
The whole pattern is made up of Log Cabin blocks and I used the Creative Grids Log Cabin Trim Tool, which allows you to trim and straighten pieces as you go, super easy and accurate!
The Amy Butler Soulmate print looks lovely on the wings and frames the quilt beautifully, I used it for the outer section of the blocks and for the binding. I used another decorative stitch for the quilting, it works well with the print designs and adds a little more texture.
Sharpie to the rescue!

My daughter is going to a birthday party and of course that means I make a gift to give the birthday girl. I'm making a zip bag, with her name appliquéd on one side and a butterfly on the other. I'm going with 'rustic' looking zig zag appliqué and had the bright idea of using my lovely dark brown #4241 Aurifil 12wt thread for the body and antennae. It looks great but I was too daft to think of changing my bobbin thread so ended up with glaring bits of white thread:
Obviously I could have unpicked it and changed the bobbin thread but I'm too tired/lazy/busy for such sensible behaviour, so instead I coloured it in with a Sharpie.
Job done. I promise it looks better in real life! And I'm going with 'rustic' remember?! I have quilts to make people ;) Now lets hope I can finish it properly without resorting to cheating!
There are great free appliqué patterns here, including letters, numbers and instructions (that don't include the use of Sharpies!).
I promised...

to make my eldest daughter a 'big girl' quilt. Here it is laid out on my living room floor:
And a weirder perspective on it (I stood on the other side and rotated the photo!):
It does make the butterflies look like they're flying over the flowers though! I made the appliqué flower blocks and 6 of the butterfly blocks, the rest were made by my wonderful Bee A Brit Stingy mates. The little one had a long nap today so I actually managed to cut some solids to use for the sides of the quilt. It all needs to be sewn together and then hand quilted can begin (urm after I've hand quilted a couple of other quilts!!). It's her fifth birthday in November, there's a slim chance I can get it done by then right?!
I also asked my Simply Solids Bee to make me blocks I could use in a quilt for a local children's charity:
This doesn't literally have to be something made for charity, although charity makes are welcome, it could be any interpretation of the theme so be sure to join us and link your finished project (or quilt top) for a chance to win a gift certificate to the Fat Quarter Shop!
happy accident

some times that happens... you mess up but it doesn't look too bad. I clearly wasn't really concentrating when I sewed this butterfly
It's meant to look like this
But the mistake still works and I like it so I'm keeping it in. Who knew it would look so different just swapping the wings! Actually I think the top one will look fantastic with the Alice Brooks butterfly blocks because it's similar. One more butterfly and one appliqué block left to do. Oh and stitching the antennae obviously!
(sorry for the bad evening pics, it was the only chance I've had to get a picture of them!)
I've posted some fabric inspiration for this months theme order at le challenge, go take a look and share any ideas you have!
