make music wherever you go ~ guitar baby quilt
14 April 2017
When I saw the Fat Quarter Baby book I knew I was going to make the 'Kevin' quilt for my sister and brother in law (who loves playing guitar). At that point she wasn't even pregnant but I could have given it to them for the cat. Earlier this year, however, my sister gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and so I had a reason to finish the quilt, which I gifted last week. Prepare to be bombarded with baby cuteness...
Starshine in Nightfall, Rhoda Ruth by Elizabeth Hartman; Lined Grids in Yarrow, Dow by Carolyn Friedlander; Southwest Key in Nature, Rhoda Ruth by Elizabeth Hartman; Crosshatch in Chestnut, Architextures by Carolyn Friedlander; Ant March in Citron, Picnic by Melody Miller and Coming Home in Clay, Bound by April Rhodes
Background: Subdivided in Grey, Doe by Carolyn FriedlanderBacking: Butter Churn in Navy, Feed Company by Sweetwater
Pattern: Kevin quilt from Fat Quarter Baby
Quilted with Aurifil 40wt #2600 and 12wt #4241 for the guitar strings.
She is so precious!
Happily her parents love the quilt and it's currently in her cot :)
Go-Go bowl and Sajou sewing supplies
08 January 2017
Isn't this such a cute bowl?! I made it using Go-Go Kim's fantastic pattern 'Go-Go Bowl', available from Go-Go Kim Sews on Etsy or on Craftsy.
I loved making it, the pattern is really well written with great instructions. The blanket stitching was so meditative and simple hand sewing during the evening is my favourite thing to do. This would look lovely in so many fabrics but I went with a retro / modern mix.
Outer fabric: Blue Tape Measures by Suzuko Koseki
Inner fabric: Sprinkle in Jelly Bracelet by Cotton + Steel
Thread is a big passion of mine, I like trying different brands and types. I got some Fil Au Chinois Gloving thread from Sajou last year and it's such good quality, strong but fine. So I thought I would try their embroidery thread too and picked out some pretty colours:
I also bought this Garnish Awl. After doing the Sew Sturdy Travel Organizers class and seeing how Annie used her stiletto, I really wanted to try one. Despite looking everywhere I couldn't find an awl, I thought we had one but suspect it might have been a big DIY one anyway! So this cute green one will be perfect. She uses it to help her sew at the machine, to hold things in place or any time when you want to put your fingers close to the needle but can't. When I start to use it I will let you know if it is as handy as it she makes it seem, I suspect it will be.
Sajou also kindly sent these lovely thread cards with my order, I especially love the Eiffel tower one!
I hope you've all had a lovely weekend, my kids are back at school tomorrow so I might be able to crack on with some sewing projects!
*If you click the link to Sajou and make a purchase you and I will both receive a €5.00 voucher so we can buy more goodies! Once you've registered you will get a code to share with people too.
heads up
27 February 2013
I have begun blanket stitching the blanket - it's going well and much faster than I thought (always good!)
Despite generally working on a few hand sewing projects (rose stars, cross stitch and some embroidery) I did get a chance to work on some Bee blocks.
These are for Carol in the Simply Solids Bee, she supplied the fabric and they were super easy, fun blocks to do.
This one is scrappy for Helen in Scrappy? Sew Bee It. Seeing all the bright blocks the other members have made I think this is going to be a stunning quilt!
The 'heads up' is a couple of cool internet things going on...
Christa is having a quilt-along for her gorgeous 'Hugs 'n Kisses' quilt. You can get all the info on her blog and there are great giveaways every week!
Quilt kits are available at ChristaQuilts and the pattern is very jelly roll friendly.
If you like embroidery you should also check out the Sublime Stitching website - they have a brilliant new free pattern! Very 'boy friendly' too.
So above and beyond the sewing I have been spending a lot of time nourishing this little one... except she's not so little and at only 5 weeks old she nearly doesn't fit on the change mat!!
I also got some great shots of her in the embroidered outfit, add your own captions ;)

Spinning Stars
07 September 2012
I made this quilt for one of my favourite couples new baby boy. They are dear friends and I wanted to make them something special. She gave me a gorgeous bundle of fabric to work with and I chose this fabulous Anna Maria Horner pattern, which I kept a surprise. I handed it over last weekend and I'm pleased they loved it! My friend is a very talented knitter so I know she appreciates hand made.
This is the very first quilt I've hand quilting and I loved every minute. I used Anchor pearl cotton and used quite large stitches to outline the circles and star shapes. I adore the look it gives the quilt.
I had a good friend make me the templates, since I knew I'd want to make it again (she actually makes the most amazing jewellery, check out Wonderhaus). I used Lynne's awesome tutorial to get the points matching nicely. I made a label and attached it with a blanket stitch.
I almost called this quilt 'The one I didn't want to give away' but my husband nixed that idea. Seeing their gorgeous baby made me feel glad to make them something so special :)
As if by magic, Katy is currently having a Spinning Stars QAL so if you want to make one of your own hop over and join in!
There's a lot of lovely inspiration over on the Flickr group and it's always nice to be able to ask questions as you go along.
This is also the baby quilt listed on my FAL post so that's another one checked off!
