cuteness and kindness

30 May 2016

Some stashing, a helpful quilting tip and half term holiday fun!

I've already shared these purchases over on Instagram but in case you haven't seen them and so I can record the details, here's what I bought recently...

Two yards of this gorgeous Hexie Fabric by Heidi Kennedy from Spoonflower - designed to fit 1.25" hexies! I'm not sure I will do hexies but I couldn't resist the cute illustrations.

If you haven't heard, Spoonflower now also ships from Germany and that makes the shipping costs for all of us in Europe much cheaper! Shipping starts from $1 for a fat quarter but make sure you select to have it shipped from Germany.

The prices are still higher than regular quilting cotton but I think it's so great to support independent artists and a nice way to find fabric with unique and different designs.

I also got these gorgeous handmade screen printed panels from Skinny Malinky Quilts. This is part of her new collection Actinomycetes, which will be released 2nd June. Check out her Etsy shop!

Next up, not fabric but geeky pins! I LOVE Buffy and Kevin Smith films so I had to represent with these fun pins from Jenni's Prints - another Etsy shop, filled with brilliant patches and pins for cult film and tv fans!

It's not been all shopping, I have done some sewing too! I thought I would share a little tip, when using your walking foot it helps to have the edge of the foot hang over the seam line. That way the foot helps guide you more and you have a neat straight quilting line. Helen also pointed out to me that you can move your needle across, which is perfect if you are top stitching!

Yesterday my family had an adventure at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, we went to see the Kaws exhibition which was brilliant and I was really taken with the work of Not Vital.

Although the kids liked the art, they mostly loved the outdoors!

We are enjoying the half term holidays but Fred was devastated when someone flooded his house on Minecraft today. His sisters were adorable and jumped straight to comfort him. I hope the love continues this week!

exuberance

07 September 2015

With no plans this weekend we hit the parks...

Wythenshawe Park is fairly local to us, it had a beautiful historic hall that I took some pictures of because I would love to create a quilt pattern based on some of the shapes.

Those flowers were huge!

Then on Sunday we went to the stunning Yorkshire Sculpture Park. One of our favourite places to visit and this time we saw Poppies: Wave by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper; Bob and Roberta Smith: Art For All and Rob Ryan: Listen to the World amongst many more fabulous artists throughout the park.

I also got some wonderful stash additions this week. The incredibly kind Molli Sparkles sent me a package after I won his giveaway and some extra florals, which he knows I love ;) I'm in Liberty heaven and have never owned pieces this big! Liberty EPP plans are afoot!

And a couple of places had New Look pattern sales recently so I took the first step in my dressmaking journey and bought some:

I try to take advantage of sales when I can!

Speaking of...

Green Fairy Quilts have a Labor Day sale on (which ends tonight so hurry!), use the code LABOR at checkout for HUGE savings on already great prices across the store! These are just some of their gorgeous new arrivals:

Fat Quarter Shop is also having a brilliant sale, with 20% off all Layer Cakes!

Check out their newest Shortcut Quilt, Star Cakes. A free pattern that uses one print Layer Cake and one solid Layer Cake!

The week feels like it's off to a good start, maybe it was all that fresh air at the weekend, I'm feeling exuberant and am tackling my to do list with fury! Let's hope I can keep it up because it's a pretty long list ;)

tiny hexies and growing kids

05 September 2013
Today I randomly decided I would make some little hexies from my teeny Liberty scraps. I'm doing 1/2" hexies because 1/4" just seemed a little crazy.

Since I haven't done a random Thursday post for a while humour me by looking at a bunch of random pictures I took over the summer holidays...

This awesome huge chalk wall outside the Whitworth Art Gallery was fun for the kids, while mummy madly went round using a baby wipe to remove all the obscene doodles.

A visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, mosaic sculpture by Marialuisa Tadei:

and this striking one by Niki de Saint Phalle:

Some cute pictures of the kids when they cooperate for the (phone) camera:

And general silliness (rampant at our house!):

A random grass verge near our house, apparently someone was planning on watching TV outside

Joan found the plug in the grass, which explained why it wasn't on.

I'm wondering if people around the world take their TVs outside, or just the Brits because it's never normally warm enough to do it and we just like the idea of sitting outside to watch TV because it makes us feel healthier??!

Anyway Lois isn't interested in TV, too busy investigating everything. I don't normally put things on her head (except hats) but this cute headband was a gift and prettied up her outfit nicely, it only stayed on for about the time it took to take these pictures anyway. Oh and I have no idea what that second picture is about but it's funny and you can see her two front teeth!

Don't you just love baby dungarees?! Adorable and yet why would any baby need pockets?! Is it a ploy to charge more for the unnecessary fabric? Also why the loop, will she be slinging her hammer in it? No. Still adorable though. I can't resist baby dungarees (they were her brothers, then her sisters and honestly still look like new, love good denim!).

Heart-melting time... she's starting saying 'mama'. Maybe more like 'mamamamamama' but it is the most adorable thing and she says it mostly in the night and when she wants milk. It is tear jerkingly wonderful.

Oh and FYI for mums of teething babies (who have started eating finger food) corn on the cob is awesome!! It is brilliant to keep them busy while you eat your own dinner ;)
I recommend eating the corn first (well I did) and give them the husk with the remains - worked like a charm for mine!

I will be back with a quilt finish tomorrow.
