childish and thankful ~ Marcella and Primrose
A couple more Farmer's Wife 1930's Sew-along blocks that I have finished. I still have quite a few to catch up on... slowly but surely making my way through them!
#56 Marcella
This was such a lovely little story. As a mum to three I completely identify with having to get lots of stuff done but those play times, like "make-believe tea" allow us not only to connect with our children but also to relax and be in the moment. I chose fabrics to remind me of their little tea party and kept it mostly light and bright.
"It is a great privilege of us mothers to relive our childish days with our children and to keep in step with their youth as time goes on. It helps to keep our spirits from growing old and shriveled".
I did English Paper Piecing to construct this block.
#85 Primrose
This letter really made me smile, the thankful way she appreciates what little she has. It struck me that as a "little Flemish girl during the World War" she went through so much and really longed to live in America after receiving "cups of cocoa and buns". I decided this was the opportunity I needed to use this Fruit Gum, Fruit Dots by Melody Miller because to me it is perfectly American and also serves as a reminder to be grateful for all the things we have, no matter how small!

hopeful and trying ~ Autumn, Blossom and Iris
So it's been a little while and I have slowly been working on my Farmer's Wife 1930's Sew-along blocks.
Currently my household has suffered a horrible bout of gastroenteritis, myself included, and my son has badly sprained his foot. The three kids are tucked up on the sofa watching a movie and I'm hoping they might be able to enjoy the sunshine later today if they perk up a bit.
Please forgive the horrible cropping of the first couple of blocks, it's just the best I can do right now and they would not lie flat!
I decided to go back to some English paper piecing, I've been doing a lot of hand piecing so it made a nice change. It also gave me a chance to test out the fabulous Fil Au Chinois Gloving Thread from Sajou*. I've been using it in combination with the Milliners Size 11 by Richard Hemming & Son needles from Sunny Day Supply. I'm really pleased, the stitches are almost invisible and it's a definite improvement.
As always I chose the fabrics for the blocks based on the letters in the The Farmer's Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt, I really enjoy picking out fabrics and one of favourite things about the Sew-along is reading the letters!
#9 Autumn
I fussy cut some Shibuya, Tokyo Train Ride by Sarah Watts to represent the children and the Doe weave print is for the work and business. The beautiful Coquette print by Art Gallery Fabrics (from Patchfinders) is perfect for the "relaxation of both mind and body". I would love to have a "little siesta" but I can't imagine the trouble the three year old could get into! Instead my "precious half-hour" comes after bed time.
#15 Blossom
It's all about life's little things isn't it? The simple act of a neighbour sharing plants lifted the Flower Lover's spirits. I chose Peaches Sprinkle for "hope and courage" and combined it with a mix of Liberty prints, in shades of blue because she was "discouraged and blue". Those pretty blooms make me "happy and hopeful" too though!
#44 Iris
I love the graphic look of this flower and think it's one the prettiest blocks. I picked out a purple spot print from one of Jen Kingwell's Gardenvale prints (similar to the Lollies) and the Pickle, Carkai by Carolyn Friedlander was perfect since they were "putting up pickles and making jelly". I really wanted to stick to the colours of the flower for this one though and I think it works nicely.
I'm still missing some blocks out and that's ok. There's so many gorgeous blocks being made in the facebook group, it's full of inspiration!
Think I will join the kids on the sofa and this week I would like to get some things checked off my FAL list so wish me luck with that :)
