trip around the world quilt

12 November 2018

trip around the world quilt charm about you

My husband sneakily took this as I was taking pictures of the finished quilt, I think it's a pretty cool photo!
Last week I made this trip around the world quilt for a Sewing Quarter demo. Now these aren't all colours I would normally go for but I really like this combination of pastel colours with the deep purple and bright blues. It's a mix of solids, Linea and prints from the Bijoux range by Makower.

scrappy binding on a quilt

Cutting strips from 'tubes' for the blocks leaves you with some extra, so I used some of them in the binding too. I made sure to press all the seams open so the binding wouldn't be too bulky and I interspersed it with strips of the print fabric to avoid having seams in the corners. I made a long strip for binding and then laid it out around the quilt to make sure! Good job too because I had to add in another fabric strip between the pieced sections to make it work.

▪ houndstooth runner & quick step quilt ▪

02 February 2018
This is a fresh and pretty quilt made for Sewing Quarter. I had fun quilting this one and doing a bit of appliqué. The four patches were strip pieced so it came together quite easily.

quick step quilt

The Quick Step quilt pattern is from the book Quick & Easy Quilts from Annie's, Leisure Arts. I made a smaller version than the one in the book, with four blocks and sashing.

The wavy lines in the centre were free motion quilted and then I used the walking foot to do some straight lines and curves around the outside. I didn't mark any lines, just eyeballed it. I really enjoyed creating the curves! Given more time I think this pattern would be perfect for some intricate free motion quilting and those larger sections could be filled with beautiful designs, something floral to match the flowers created by the appliqué perhaps.

braid quilt and colour wheel (sort of!)

03 November 2017

Last weekend I was on Sewing Quarter, using fun shapes and tools to create two small quilts - one of which used a bit of artistic licence!

The first is this 'Braid' baby quilt, using inspiration from Carolyn Forster's book One Patch Quilts. It's a clever book that explores quilts made from a single repeating shape and is perfect for sparking ideas and playing with shapes. I used Scandi Basics by Makower and a solid red to make a striking repeat. This curved stitch has become one of my favourites for quilting. I used grey and red thread alternately so red would be on the 'hearts' and grey on the patterned fabric.

quilt round-up

25 August 2017

This is a round-up of quilts I have made for Sewing Quarter - including a couple that I failed to blog about and made some time ago. It's nice to have a document here of the quilts I have finished. The quilt above was made using a jelly roll of Kaffe Fassett fabric and some solid white squares. I had made Bright Hopes blocks before but never a whole quilt of them, I think it makes a beautiful random pattern and I would like to make another quilt using this block, it's a great stash buster too!

I also made this random curves quilt using a Tula Pink layer cake. This was a fun and simple quilt to sew.

Laying out the blocks took me a while because they are so many different patterns you can create. Curves are possibly my favourite thing to sew. If you haven't tried it you should! I learnt how to sew without pins using this video, though I prefer to use my quarter inch foot. I know people have different methods so it might be worth taking a class or just experimenting to see what way you prefer.

Earlier this month I made this sweet baby Stunning Stars quilt using a pattern from Annie's Quick & Easy Quilts. It was an unusually bright day in Manchester so the colours look a bit washed out here. I enjoyed adding a scrappy solid binding to this one:

Today was Christmas at Sewing Quarter (because it's four month away!!) and so I used adorable Makower prints to make this simple baby quilt with cute fussy cutting.

The pattern is in Modern Baby Quilts by Fons & Porter. Thanks to Producer Paul for the arty shot below!

We are due to have some hot weather in the UK this weekend and I'm looking forward to some family time outdoors. I hope you all have a lovely weekend and if you're making on Saturday night come and join me on instagram from around 6pm GMT for the Saturday Night Craft Along!

Cross Steps Quilt ~ free pattern

07 August 2017

This is a bold quilt, with rich purple, mustard yellow and cool greys. I love traditional Log Cabin and Courthouse Steps blocks and I played with them to create a modern and striking quilt.

The blocks are simple to make but the placement of dark and light fabrics completely alters the look, it also gives a brightness and movement to the quilt. I was pleased that this translated well from my scribbled design!

I used the Creative Grids Log Cabin Trim Tool Two to make the blocks, which meant it was quick as I didn't have to measure all the pieces and the tool makes it incredible accurate!

I quilted it using Aurifil 40wt in a soft grey with a simple cross hatch pattern.

The solid fabrics and Linea texture prints are all by Makower.

You can get the free pattern for the Cross Steps quilt by clicking here. The blocks are 12.5" unfinished and the finished quilt is approx. 48" x 48".
