Pineapples and Paris Star quilt
14 November 2018
It's been sew sew sew at my house! These projects each have a lot of seams and used up a lot of thread. Completely worth it though because they turned out really nicely.
My first project used the new Bird Pond collection in Blue and Teal by Tilda. I made two sizes of pineapple blocks for a 20" cushion front (which I did make into a cushion but I don't have a picture of the finish!). I chose to fussy cut the gorgeous Anemone print for the centre of the largest block and for the corner squares.
Surrounded by smaller blocks like this, it looks like ripples on a pond. The blocks were made using the Creative Grids Pineapple Trim Tool, both the larger (for the 10" centre block) and mini version (for the eight 5" blocks). It makes it so easy to create really accurate, straight seams for what is otherwise a fiddly block. Someone messaged the show to ask if you could foundation paper piece these blocks, of course you can and a quick google search showed up plenty of free patterns you can use. Personally I prefer using the tools, it really is so simple once you get in the swing of it - just be sure to follow the instructions! I have made errors myself though those blocks still turned out nicely, they just weren't pineapples! I also think this is a brilliant way to use up scraps and like that you can create so many different layouts playing with fabric placement. You can see my 'mistake' blocks and another version of the block I made during the demo, video at the end of this post.
My other project is a quilt top made using the fabulous Paris Star pattern by Lynne Goldsworthy. This is such a stunning design and Lynne's instructions are excellent as always. I really like those half stars and the way they disappear into the border. It's a fairly big quilt finishing at 70" but the piecing isn't complicated.
Here is lovely Vicki (and her beautiful princess hair) with a ta da moment after director Tim did a great job of hanging the quilt top in the studio. Not as easy when it's a flimsy that's larger than the angled wall!
There are lots of points to match while making these stars but I showed a couple of tips during the demo that should help. The four blocks that make up the quilt come together fairly quickly and the borders are simple, perfect for some fancy quilting if you wanted to. This is definitely one of those designs that looks slightly terrifying but once you've made it you want to make another!

tula pink rainbow leaves runner
03 June 2017
Sometimes a pattern and a fabric collection seem made for each other, and this bed runner is one of those! I used two charm packs of Tula Pink's Eden (with plenty left over) to create the Rainbow Leaves Runner from Quick and Easy Quilts by Lynne Goldsworthy for the Sewing Quarter.
I adore all the projects in the book, I've already made the Gypsy Cushion, and this runner is a great way to add some modern brightness to a room.
The appliqué is relatively quick and easy to do, I used pinking shears to cut the leaf shapes and used Aurifil 50 wt #2021 to stitch them in place. I spent the longest time arranging the leaves and am super pleased with the graduation of the colours.
I used my walking foot to echo the shapes of the leafs, working from edge to edge along the rows.
It created beautiful patterns on the back of the quilt too!
It was hard to get a decent picture of the whole runner, I have put a little video clip on my instagram if you want to check that out!
But you can get an idea of how it looks on a bed because Sewing Quarter presenter John Scott, the cheeky rascal, 'borrowed' it for an evening and took these pictures (don't panic he returned it to the studio the next day!)
Quick & Easy Quilts ~ Giveaway!
14 April 2016
**giveaway now closed**
I'm excited to be part of the Quick & Easy Quilts blog tour. As soon as I received my copy I sat down and spent time admiring the 20 beautiful projects. I even made notes on which ones I want to make and which fabric I would use!
I really love Lynne's style and have followed her blog Lily's Quilts for as long as I've been quilting. The projects in the book are all beautifully photographed by Jan Baldwin and there are great illustrations by Bess Harding. It's really helpful to have pictures and diagrams, it makes the instructions so clear and I like seeing full photographs of each finished project.
I was so inspired and just had to make the 'Gypsy Cushion', it's a good size at 17" and there's something so homely and pleasing about a circular cushion!
The book helpfully contains full size templates, I'm often put off other patterns by the thought of having to mess around enlarging templates, and it meant I could start sewing right away! I made a photocopy of the template, cut it out and glued it to thick card so I could rotary cut all the wedges. The hardest part was thinking about the direction of these fussy cut vintage ladies.
I added some hand quilting with black perle thread and used a cheater patchwork print for the sides and back. The instructions are really clear and it was quick to make!
Lynne is an experienced quilter, the 'Equipment and Materials' and 'Techniques' sections of the book are excellent for beginners and there are tips for quilters of all abilities. It is definitely a book written by a quilter for quilters and Lynne has created 20 gorgeous projects that you will want to sew. The 'Under My Umbrella' quilt is next on my list.
I think the publishers Kyle Books have done a fabulous job too - as a book lover I really like the textured cover, the fact it is hard back and the way it's been bound means that the pages easily lie flat, a big bonus when you're following a pattern!
