bonnie curves drawstring bag
Oh how I love sewing a little make all for myself! Especially when it's cute and useful!
The Bonnie Curves pattern by Laura Cunningham is really fun, with great advice for sewing curves and a tutorial for the most adorable drawstring bag.
I'm confident sewing curves, though Laura includes lots of helpful tips in case you're not, but improvised sewing can be unnerving and this was an easy way to do improv and still follow a pattern (I like structure). The steps are all laid out but you are creating the curves and adapting the instructions as you wish.
It was a good excuse to raid my scrap basket too. I found this gorgeous Deer Valley print by Joel Dewberry (discontinued) and mixed it with some Carkai by Carolyn Friedlander, Essex Yarn Dyed Metallic in Storm and Netorious in Camp Out, Cotton and Steel for the casing and lining.
I am using the bag to hold my precious selvedges! Also by keeping the bag in sight I might remember to actually use them every now and again.
This is the reverse side of the bag, though actually I think I prefer it - the touch of floral and the bright Bear Hug, Spirit Animal by Tula Pink makes me so happy.

I adore everything Lucy SkinnyMalinkyQuilts prints, and her latest design is no exception! I got this print in three colourways - there are even more variations in her shop and you can create your own bundles. The hand printed panels are so unique and check out the spot fabric she has too!
Next was some much needed back up glue refills and the beautiful (but hard to photograph) Essex Yarn Dyed Metallic in black, oyster and sand from Simply Solids. This is for my Mischief Quilt.
Finally I can't resist Liberty, especially when it's £9.00 a metre (with an extra 10% off at checkout)!! garden snail goes to town
My snail is loving life, it has its glad rags on and is heading into town for a night out! With flecks of metallic in its shell and a dusting of glitter on its body, this snail is ready to boogie!
This block is from the Garden Snails Quilt Pattern by Pen + Paper Patterns and I'm joining Angie, Gnome Angel and friends for #snailday Sunday as part of the Snail Paced Slow-Along Sew-Along!
The pattern includes this bonus foundation paper pieced block and I couldn't resist that swirly shell. I enjoyed a root through my scrap bag and ended up picking out some bright greens and fuchsias mixed with black and a little bit of coral. I absolutely had to use that Brownstones, Gramercy by Leah Duncan print for the background and it pairs so beautifully with the Essex Yarn Dyed Metallic I used for the body.

make do and make new
Sometimes a mistake can bring about good things! While making a bag for my sewing supplies, I cut one of the quilted panels wrong. I was so mad at myself because it was one of my favourite prints. The accident happened though and there was no fixing it. After a dig through my stash I found more fabrics I could happily use for my bag. And the panel I cut wrong has now become two cute zip pouches.
The sides were already quilted panels so I couldn't do the usual 'turn through the lining' way of making. For the larger one I added the zip, then top stitched the zip tape (from the lining side) to hide the unfinished seam. On the smaller one I did a double row of stitching to secure the zip and just lazily trimmed the seam with pinking shears.
It was nice to use some fun zips too! The smaller pouch measures 6" x 6 ¾" and the larger one is 10 ½" x 6 ¾".
