festival of quilts 2019

05 August 2019
english paper piecing with coffee

I spent two days at the Festival of Quilts this year and it was fully all about friends for me. It's like a quilty friend reunion and this post is going to be unashamedly about the people I met and the friends I saw... with quilts and cool finds interspersed throughout. If you are looking for a blog post featuring all the beautiful quilts that were on display, this isn't it (sorry). You will certainly find pictures of all the quilts on social media, like here.

Friday

After a fun road trip down with my friends Michelle and Rachel we arrived in Birmingham (a bit later than expected thanks to traffic) on Friday and I went straight to find my friend Nicky. She made this amazing Expanding Universe Quilt with signature blocks from quilters that have contributed to Siblings Together.

My block is a cornerstone in the top right of the quilt but I'm too short to properly point at it. Cue the first of many friend selfies...

Next on my to do was visit my colleagues and friends at the Janome stand and of course to see the awesomeness that is this quilted jacket made by talented Lucy Engels.

I am madly in love with every aspect of this, the colours, the collar and cuffs, the log cabins and the texture of the quilting. It's the only quilted garment I've ever truly wanted to wear!

I also had to visit my friend Charlotte, we have known each other since we were in an online quilting bee ages ago and it's always nice to catch up. We also compared bee tattoos and I admired her beautiful bee dress!

hearts and hugs quilt

27 March 2018

I was lucky enough to get to play with some of the new Ludlow collection by Denyse Schmidt. Inspired by the mills and red brick buildings of New England, Ludlow is full of gorgeous geometrics and pretty florals. Denyse is one of my favourite designers and her colour ways are always stunning.

Using the blues and reds I revisited my Heart and Kisses quilt design, this time using appliqué circles and hearts. The large appliqué pieces means the quilt comes together quite quickly and also showcases the prints beautifully.

Even my husband fell in love with these prints (with no prompting from me!!). I used some of the prints on the back too and the bold Diamond Medallion print looks amazing.

📖 monogrammed book cover

05 January 2018

I made something just for me! And I love it. A few years ago I made an embroidered patchwork notebook cover and now I'm wondering why it took me so long to make another version. They really are fun to make and a fabric cover feels so lovely, it's also a good way to protect your book. After browsing the internet I decided to use this tutorial by Charlotte Scott, I was inspired by her embellishments and the measurements she gives worked perfectly! It's also an interesting construction. I didn't use any interfacing though because my main fabrics were Essex Yarn Dyed Linen and this cool Taupe Punched Faux Leather. I did think about keeping it really simple with just those two fabrics but it felt a bit boring. I have a stash of selvedges that I've collected over the years and it's nice to rummage through them and find text or graphics that work with the project. Can you guess what the book is?

running and sailing

26 June 2017

It seems runners are my new make of choice. It's a fun way to showcase blocks without making a whole quilt and I think it's lovely to be able to cover all the surfaces in fabric! I also have a finished quilt to share and all these projects were demonstrated on Sewing Quarter.

This beautiful flower explosion was made with Free Spirit pre cut hexagons, the centre is Denyse Schmidt solid and the rest are by Kaffe Fassett.

I took inspiration from the book Happy Hexies by Boutique-Sha to make this oval table runner.

The 4" free printable hexagon templates from Love Patchwork & Quilting (it includes other sizes!) worked perfectly with the pre cuts and it was enjoyable stitching. The runner was made by simply layering the plain top right sides together with backing and wadding, sewing around the edges leaving a gap for turning. After turning through and top stitching, I glue basted the hexies to the background, then quilted a top stitch around the edges and echo quilted the flower and centre. I love that it's bright but has a nice retro feel at the same time.

I also made a more modern and bright runner, made of eight blocks from the Woven Links quilt pattern in Annie's Lap & Throw Quilts.

The jewel tones are really striking and it creates such a cool design, lots of ways you can play with this pattern to create different effects too. I don't have a picture of the length of the runner but you can see the woven element here.

I did some straight line quilting and mimicked squares within the diamond space. Given more time I think this would be incredible with a lot of dense quilting or some detailed free motion quilting.

Finally the Sailing Sailing Quilt from Beginner-Friendly Baby Quilts by Linda Causee, a simple and cute make!

I chose to make half squares triangles, using both the traditional and four in one method, as it was quicker than cutting lots of triangles using the templates in the book.

The quilting suits the theme perfectly, I used blue and white thread to quilt 'waves' using my Elna (mode 2, #19).

I am hoping to have a productive week and get some of my own projects finished, my wip list is out of control! Wishing you all a happy Monday :)

Dutch Tulips quilt along

30 March 2017

It's Sew Emma have a new quilt pattern, Dutch Tulips and I am joining in the quilt along to make pretty spring flowers! The quilt pattern can be made in four different sizes: crib, lap, twin and queen. The blocks come together easily and it is so fun choosing fabric combinations to create the tulip.

The bold combination of prints is the result of raiding my stash / scraps along with some new fabric. I love the rope text print with the striking stripes and the black and white print reminded me of the anthers of a tulip!

I chose the petal prints first and then couldn't find a green that worked well with them for the stem and leaves, so instead I decided to use this blue Denyse Schimdt fabric, which works well with the background fabric too.

I chose to machine appliqué the leaves, though you could sew them by hand if you prefer. The soft pale blue Aurifil #2847 was perfect.

I am making this into a cushion cover and haven't yet decided on a layout. I may make another tulip block and then decide!

What fabric would you use for this quilt?

Head over to the Jolly Jabber to see the two quilts made by Fat Quarter Shop and visit all the other bloggers to see their versions - they are all beautiful and very creative! There is also a giveaway to win your choice of It's Sew Emma patterns, click here to read more!

Gilmore Girls mug rug ☕

04 December 2016

Whether you are a fan of the show or not, this free pattern from Anorina at Samelia's Mum is adorable and you could easily add your own quote. I happen to love the show and the new series. I listen to the theme song Where You Lead by Carole King on every episode!

It was a lot of fun picking the fabrics. The soft Make Drafts, Maker by AGF Studio is a sweet cup and I tried to balance it with the bold Shadow Dot, Hadley by Denyse Schmidt, which also fits nicely with the coffee theme!

I enjoy doing embroidery and a little project like this is a nice quick make. I used two strands of Aurifloss #2530 and a simple backstitch for the text.

I added some hand quilting, steam coming from the cup and some little crosses to mimic the fabric print, using Aurifil 12wt #2021.

This is my first time doing reverse appliqué and, while it's far from perfect, I'm really pleased with it and definitely want to do more. I had no clue what I was doing so I used this Fons & Porter video tutorial to help me. I had the perfect brown Aurifil 50wt #1285 to do the top stitching. I did needle turn appliqué the cut out of the handle but it looked odd without the top stitching so I added it! It would be super quick to make this and just do raw edge appliqué but it was nice for me to try and challenge myself.

I loved Anorina's mug rug so much that I decided to add in some trim. I have a bag of it that someone gave me and is the perfect finishing touch!

Now I'm not sure I want to put my coffee on it so it might live on my bedside table instead!

how did I miss this? - stashing

13 December 2015

I had a Fat Quarter Shop splurge recently... I really wanted a couple of prints (from Katie Jump Rope, Fibs and Fables and Gooseberry) and then I came across some more gorgeous prints, a couple of which I had never seen before and am really in love with!

left to right: Atomic Dot in Nugget, Katie Jump Rope by Denyse Schmidt; Floral Stripe in Sorbet, New Bedford by Denyse Schmidt; Gooseberry Patch in Midnight, Gooseberry by Lella Boutique and Ruffled in Midnight, Gooseberry by Lella Boutique (LOVE this print!)

Now I know brown isn't always popular with modern quilters but that Katie Jump Rope print is stunning! My six year old daughter also declared it her favourite of the whole lot so that's saying something!

left to right: Escape in Midnight, Fibs and Fables by Anna Maria Horner; Minutes in Brick, Fibs and Fables by Anna Maria Horner; Splash in Spring, Cascade by Jessica Levitt (very pretty and a useful low volume print) and Sprinkles Glitch in Rainbow, Playing Pop by AGF Studios.

I do not know how I hadn't seen the Playing Pop line (not enough blog reading?!) but it is gorgeous. There are some stunning prints, modern and funky in great colours. I think the AGF Studios lines are often brilliant and this one really appeals to me. The Sugar Crystals and Clueless Hearts prints are my favourites - I need to find an excuse to get them! ;)

I didn't need an excuse to get the one above because it's got my name in it! Lucy Monkey Magic, Gardenvale by Jen Kingwell (now sold out but you can get the Carnevale colourway on sale if you're quick!). I love that you get so many different dots in one cut of fabric!

There is currently a sale on the new Blueberry Park by Karen Lewis at Pretty Fabrics and Trims so I got a couple and I will be using these in my Farmer's Wife 1930's quilt:

left to right: Babs in Navy, Vintage Florals by Michael Miller; Flowerbed in Creamsicle, Blueberry Park by Karen Lewis and Allotments in Ash, Blueberry Park by Karen Lewis.

Finally I went a bit bonkers at Aliexpress and got a load of stationery - for me, for the kids and for gifts! It was fun opening that box!

Have you had any fun parcels to open recently?

passion ~ le challenge ~ Chicopee flowers cushion

14 March 2015

The theme at le challenge this month is 'passion'. I had lots of ideas of things I would like to make but after making my fresh flowers cushion I couldn't stop thinking about making a random bouquet. I decided to use my hoarded Chicopee by Denyse Schmidt charm pack to make the flowers, using shapes from Paper Pieces. Since I started English Paper Piecing it has definitely become a passion of mine and I enjoy discovering new shapes and ways of incorporating epp into my projects.

I have also developed a passion for appliqué. I love that you can create whatever you like and it's the easiest way to make a fabric picture - whether you machine appliqué or hand appliqué like I did here:

I wanted to have a simple background so I used XOXO in Ghost, Cotton & Steel Basics and added texture by doing some cross hatch quilting. I posted a cross hatch quilting tutorial yesterday so you can see how I did it. I don't usually quilt the back of my cushions but since this is only quite small, 12 x 20", I wanted to give it some structure (plus I was having fun with the quilting!). I used XOXO in Night Owl, Cotton & Steel Basics for the back and the binding. I quilted with Aurifil 50wt thread in #2021 for the front and #2783 for the back, I love how they blend so nicely with the prints.

I also added some hand quilting with perle thread, just a few little stitches gives it a pretty hand made look and adds some texture to the flowers.

I have managed to combine so many techniques into this one cushion! All of it makes me happy, patchwork and quilting is my passion.

See how everyone else interpreted the 'passion' theme and their finished projects at le challenge. If you have made something that fits the theme come and link up for a chance to win a $25 gift certificate to the Fat Quarter Shop!

I've already starting adding bits of these into my green tea and sweet beans quilt and should have some progress to show you soon.

Today I've been going through my stash and have created a beautiful bundle for the Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day tomorrow so be sure to pop back in for that!

while away the hours

19 November 2014

I am doing a lot of hand piecing, English Paper Piecing and hand quilting and am loving it more and more. I think I need to turn my machine on just to make sure it's ok but I'm content spending my evenings curled up with a needle and thread for now.

I've done more green tea and sweet beans blocks, here are my first two Garden Paths (just one more to do):

I did some epp and hand appliqué for a cushion I hope to be teaching and of course I'm going to hand quilt it! I've chosen my perle thread and hope to crack on with it tonight:

But I couldn't stop at one and I've started another cushion (can you say addict?!!) with some lovely Chicopee by Denyse Schmidt:

Oh and I did manage to find the name of the fabric I bought at work the other day...

It's quite hard to get hold of but obviously we have some at Patchfinders and we do postal orders, so give us a call if you fancy some!
