a gift of embroidery transfers

31 January 2018

"Take your needle, my child, and work at your pattern; it will come out a rose by and by. Life is like that - one stitch at a time taken patiently and the pattern will come out all right like the embroidery."
Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.

I was delighted and so touched to receive this amazing collection of embroidery transfers, kindly given to me by Lindsey. They had belonged to her mother and Lindsey wanted them to find a good home since she doesn't embroider (though she does quilt and knit!).
Embroidery is one of the first crafts I remember doing and in many ways it's the one that I most enjoy. My Nan created the most beautiful embroidered cloths and she loves seeing me stitching too.

The file of patterns is a treasure trove of designs with plenty of florals, borders and pretty motifs. They aren't all pictured here, this is just a few I quickly took snaps of. As I looked through them I was imagined all the projects I could add some stitching to - quilt labels, clothing, pouches etc. All the while with a longing that we still used handkerchiefs. Maybe if I start embroidering them? Because look at these gorgeous fonts:

I wish all Tuesdays were like this one

10 June 2014

because today I've been commissioned to finish a beautiful vintage quilt.

The quilt has been made mostly from clothes from the 40s and 50s and the prints are so varied and gorgeous.

It has been made by three generations of women and I'm honoured to have been asked to finish the hand quilting.

It is a very large bed quilt and the hexies have been appliquéd onto a pretty blue backing.

Quite a bit of the hand quilting has already been done, though it's still going to be a fair amount of work.

It is a special task and one I will thoroughly enjoy!

Alphabet embroidered quilt

29 November 2013

I am really proud of this quilt. It took me a while to decide what to do with those cute bear, alphabet and number panels but a little bit of embroidery and some bright modern fabric makes for an adorable baby quilt!

I used different stitches to highlight details on each letter block.

Of course there's a 'Q' quilt!

mmm french knot cherries!

I did straight line quilting with my trusty cone of Aurifil 50wt in 2021.

The quilt is for sale in my Etsy shop.

I used different bold modern fabrics and dots and the backing is Riley Blake, Apple of My Eye - I really love that print! The black and white stripe binding worked perfectly.

Don't miss out - check out this post for a great discount at Fluffy Sheep Quilting until 31st Nov!

Simplicity Giveaway!

15 August 2013

**GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED**

Simplicity are completely synonymous with sewing and easy to follow patterns, so I was delighted when I was contacted recently to chose my favourite patterns to share with you.

The Simplicity website is really easy to use, packed with great patterns and provides all the information you need to chose your pattern, it clearly shows you the guide to what type and how much fabric you need.

I chose this easy-to-sew pattern of trousers, short and skirt options (love those pockets). These would be great if we have any more summer sun and the skirts would be cute with tights if we don't:

Then there's this pretty top with great variations and I'm sure there are so many fabulous fabric combinations you could use to make them. Again this would suit all seasons and be a wardrobe staple:

Finally my very favourite is this beautiful dress. A Simplicity archives vintage pattern, circa 1943. I love that it could be a day dress or an evening dress and I adore the vintage look. I think it would be incredibly flattering too:

**The giveaway is only open to people in the UK, Europe and Australasia**

I am giving away one pattern to each winner so there will be three winners!

There are also three chances for you to win:

1 - Leave a comment letting me know which of the three patterns you would like if you won.

**GIVEAWAY CLOSED**
