Simply Solids Bee Quilt - le challenge

14 June 2014

The le challenge theme this month was charity. In January it was my turn as queen bee for the Simply Solids Amaranth group and I asked the bees to make me Herringbone blocks using this tutorial. I also asked for some solid strips to use as binding as I knew this would be a quilt to give to a local child.

I tried out lots of layouts but in the end settled for a random scrappy look, which I love! It makes nice wonky diamond patterns and shows off all the bright colours. I decided to do free motion quilting and used this brilliant tutorial. I changed the direction of some of the triangles and it works well with the quilt pattern. What I now realise is this type of fmq works much better on a smaller scale and I should have created more triangle shapes because I went big and it shows all of my 'not at all straight' lines.

Thank goodness the quilt went all lovely and crinkly in the wash and it actually looks ok but when I do it again I will use a much smaller scale. I actually think all the fmq I've done that I am happy with is in small areas, so that might be a good plan for me to stick to generally. I used an equally bright backing fabric that ties in really well and I love the scrappy binding. Big thanks to the Amaranth Simply Solids bee for all the fabulous blocks and I know this quilt will be treasured by a very deserving child.

I promised...

11 June 2014

to make my eldest daughter a 'big girl' quilt. Here it is laid out on my living room floor:

And a weirder perspective on it (I stood on the other side and rotated the photo!):

It does make the butterflies look like they're flying over the flowers though! I made the appliqué flower blocks and 6 of the butterfly blocks, the rest were made by my wonderful Bee A Brit Stingy mates. The little one had a long nap today so I actually managed to cut some solids to use for the sides of the quilt. It all needs to be sewn together and then hand quilted can begin (urm after I've hand quilted a couple of other quilts!!). It's her fifth birthday in November, there's a slim chance I can get it done by then right?!

I also asked my Simply Solids Bee to make me blocks I could use in a quilt for a local children's charity:

I am currently sewing the binding on (fabric strips kindly sent by bee mates) and will be done in time for Saturday when the le challenge link opens for projects based on the theme 'CHARITY'.

This doesn't literally have to be something made for charity, although charity makes are welcome, it could be any interpretation of the theme so be sure to join us and link your finished project (or quilt top) for a chance to win a gift certificate to the Fat Quarter Shop!
