blooming

19 August 2015

It's been a productive week and I'm happy I managed to sew anything with the crazy kids around!

I finished this Bee A Brit Stingy row for Nicky. The blocks are Castle Walls by John Q. Adams from the book Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters:

I switched out the arrangement of grey / white squares so the row would have more movement, which Nicky requested.

Also managed to finish two more hand pieced flower blocks for my green tea and sweet beans quilt:

I adore that little Cocoland cat!

The next block is clamshells, which I have never done before. I'm going to do needle turn appliqué because I'm feeling brave. Here's my fabric pull for the clamshells:

Wish me luck!

just keep adding

17 August 2015

Sometimes I buy fabric with intention and then other times just because! Last week was a little mix of both...

At Patchfinders I got some Acid Green, Bella Solids because I can't resist that gorgeous colour and Coquette Collection by Art Gallery Fabrics, which I am thinking might be backing for my gtsb quilt. I also stocked up on glue refills (turned out I had some already but I know I will use them!) and another Styla water soluble pen.

Today I met up with my cousin from America, Jackie. We had a lovely lunch at my mums house and I got to take her to Patchfinders so she could see where I work and also buy some fabric.
She had very kindly agreed to be my fabric mule and bring over an order from Imagine Gnats that I had sent to her address (saves postage!). I won a voucher from quarter 2 of the Finish-Along so I got some beautiful Artisan Cotton in yellow-copper - no real reason except I like the colour, some Chambray Union in indigo dot by Robert Kaufman that is so soft and beautiful - I think I might make a dress (easy pattern recommendations welcome!) and some hand sewing needles - because I had $1 left :)

Jackie is staying with my Dad's cousin who also very kindly brought me a treat today, these incredible vintage patterns. They belonged to my Great Aunt. I haven't yet checked all the pieces are complete, though I suspect they are. I need to try some very basic dress making before I can even attempt these! I shall just admire the pretty illustrations for now:

At the weekend I got my hair did. Very pleased with it! It is so much faster to dry :)

I have made some progress on my Bee A Brit Stingy row for Nicky, I'm making Castle Walls blocks from the Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters. The kids keep interrupting me though so I'm hoping to have them finished tonight.

If you're looking for charm packs Green Fairy Quilts are currently having a brilliant sale and all charm packs are only $5.75-$6.89, be quick though the offer ends tonight! (17/8/15)

I hope your week is off to a good start :)

the best things in life

23 April 2015

like finishing bee blocks:

or in this case making a row for Catherine:

All of the blocks are from Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters. I had to add some sashing to the get the row to the correct size but I like how it creates an abstract look.
Block patterns from left to right: Migration by John Q. Adams; Landscape by Tacha Bruecher; Meeting Point by Tacha Bruecher and Bowties and Blooms by John Q. Adams

Enjoying the sunshine and shadows, playing with paintbrushes and water:

She takes her art very seriously!

The joy of simple games: sink or float?

There is an ongoing problem is our house, those dreaded missing socks!! I feel bad for the lonely ones stuck in a raggedy old bag and today I saw this tutorial to make a bag for mismatched socks, cleverly utilising an embroidery hoop and the cutest embroidery pattern!

Finally fabric sales are always awesome and right now Pink Castle Fabrics have marked down hundreds of fabrics - no coupon needed, just hop over and check out the sale section :)

currently... {& discount code!}

09 April 2015

I am finishing my le challenge project, sneak peek only!

Working on my green tea and sweet beans - excuse all the creases it gets taken around with me and chucked about!

I'm working on making a row for Catherine for Bee A Brit Stingy, I've done three blocks so far:

All the blocks are from Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters. The last one worked out a little small so I will need to add borders of some kind, I'm thinking about a strip at the bottom and to one side but will see how it works with the other blocks before I do anything. One more block to make to complete the row.

In case you haven't seen Pink Castle Fabrics currently have 20% off all in stock bundles with the code BUNDLE20! They have heaps of gorgeous bundles, I'm particularly loving the Heavy Metal, the limited edition Retro Calico and the Scrappy Sorbet 16th Bundle - which contains so many of my favourite prints! Take advantage of that code today!

Nordic bee blocks

07 September 2014

Nicky was queen bee of Bee a Brit Stingy last month and asked us for Nordic inspired blocks for her mostly red and white quilt. I had lots of ideas but not lots of time. I knew my blocks would be a little late but I still wanted to do something special for Nicky. They aren't the most adventurous blocks but I enjoyed doing them and think they'll work well with the blocks she already has.

The one at the top is a 6" block called Pentagon Flower by Brioni Greenberg from the book Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters. You are supposed to enlarge the templates by 200% to make a 12" block but I hate enlarging and thought it works well as a small block as is! It is English Paper Pieced and then machine appliquéd onto the background fabric.
The two smaller 3" blocks are Cross Stitch blocks, made using this great tutorial by Pile O'Fabric. I have wanted to make them since she did the first tutorial and I love them so much I will definitely make more! Thrilled that the crosses line up too, phew!

I hope you like them Nicky :)

It seems to be turning into a last minute panic each month but since I've had two months to prepare you think I would have started my 'era' project by now wouldn't you?! But no, I haven't. You've got seven days before the Le Challenge link opens, this month you could randomly win a $25 gift certificate to the Fat Quarter Shop and a 10 FQ bundle from Mary! She's also offering a 15% discount code to her shop until 15th September, read her post here. Find out all about le challenge and how to join in here!

Better get cracking on my project now!

I was lucky recently too and won a copy of 'Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters'. Katy was kind enough to include a template for her Orange Soda pattern too since she knows I'm desperate to make one. Thanks Katy :)
I'm a bit late for the Soda Pop QAL that Sew Allegorical hosted but it provided great examples of gorgeous versions of the quilt!
You can get templates for Katy's designs here.

I know lots of people have blogged about this book and honestly I can't say enough great things about it. It's rammed full of amazing block designs, beautiful quilts and I want to make everything in it. As you'd expect from a book by such great folk the instructions are really clear and the modern fabrics and layouts they've used are just so inspiring. If you don't have a copy, buy one now! You won't be sorry!
