⌔ patchwork stitchy pie ⌔
8 September 2017
This is everything I love! Patchwork, english paper piecing, appliqué, quilting, hand sewing - I've thrown it all in there to make this version of my Stitchy Pie needle case pattern! And of course that cat!
I used some 45° diamond papers to create a star with some of my favourite prints from my stash - Cocoland cats, a spoonflower print I got recently, Lighthearted by Ayumi Mills, Architextures by Carolyn Friendlander and Bright Heart by Amy Butler.
Since it worked so well before, I used a decorative stitch to appliqué the star (see top picture). There was a little bit of bulk in the centre and that's the bottom of the Stitchy Pie when it's folded, I reinforced it with a locking stitch on my machine and hopefully it well help the stitches hold up. It's this stitch on my Elna 680:
For a bit of fun I chose a yellow/orange felt and a pale crosshatch print for the inside. It sort of looks like an egg! I had some leftover bias binding - Essex Linen Yard Dyed in Storm - so I used that for the binding.
I added a Kam snap - they are so easy to put in with the pliers and the variety of colours is great! The orange works well with the florals in the Cocoland print.
The Stitchy Pie lining has space for you to write the size or type of needles in each section. I'm gifting this one so I will leave that up to the recipient. The felt also functions as little pockets - I store my Thimble Pads in one, you could also put clips on it.
It can fold in half...
or into quarters, which is my preference because it means everything is stored safely away and it fits into my sewing case!
It's been a while since I made a Stitchy Pie needle case and I forgot how quick and enjoyable they are to make!
The pattern is available to buy from me HERE or from my ETSY shop. The original Stitchy Pie design is an embroidery sampler (details come with the pattern) and to see all the amazing versions other people have made click here.
Now I'm going to get this wrapped up with some other goodies and send it on it's merry way.
Wishing you all a happy and creative weekend!

Classes and happy, lovely thoughts ~ Bea and Hope
31 March 2016
This is a mixed bag post... some news, some sewing and some life stuff!
I managed to complete a couple more hand pieced Farmer's Wife 1930's Sew-along blocks this week:
#11 Bea - This letter reminded me of the Diane Von Furstenberg quote, "Feel like a woman, wear a dress!". I have done this many times, just got dolled up for no reason other than to cheer myself up and I agree it "it's funny how different things look". I went with fun prints from Good Hair Day by Kim Andersson, perfect for "the Queen Bee in the hive!".
#43 Hope - I used to be a complete perfectionist about my house, cleaning and organising. After having my son I had to abandon a lot of my OCD tendencies and now I have 3 kids you would never think by looking at my house that I cared about cleaning!! So I'm all for the idea to "skip some of the daily tasks and make them weekly tasks, and enjoy my family while I still have them with me". I picked the brown and the gingham because they feel homely and represent the "home in spick and span order". The bright dots print is because "they don't care whether things are shiny spotlessly clean if they can have fun and see a happy face and hear mother join in on their jokes".
Saturday 2nd April is SALE DAY at Patchfinders and there's 20% off everything! I am working in the shop, so come along and say hi!
I've also updated my classes page, click here to see my upcoming classes - bookings are being taken at Patchfinders from Monday 4th April and places fill up fast.
For the first time myself and Jayne (dressmaker extraordinaire) are hosting evening sewing sessions and will be able to help people with sewing projects or offer advice for beginners. Perfect for everyone that can't make the day time classes! Check here for dates.
It's been a really lovely day today. I managed to sneak in a little quilting time, working on my watermelon Stitchy Pie needlecase:
I got an upgrade on my phone and opted for the new iPhone SE. I like having a small phone, I've had the 5s for a while and get on well with it so a more powerful phone that's the same size suits me perfectly! I went for the rose gold and will probably spend the rest of the evening setting it up.
Today there was an Easter service at church, it's so nice being able to go to kid's events and the whole school was there. Lois was dancing around to the organ music because she couldn't read the words to sing along with the hymns! Very sweet. The older two really like singing 'Lord of the Dance', which was one of my Grandad's favourite hymns.
At the end we waited for everyone else to go back to school and went to look at the flowers and display created by the children at the front of the church. On the way out we saw a little ladybird on the steps, we sat down and watched it and Lois giggled as it crawled on her finger. Those moments are so peaceful and wonderful. I am literally taking time to smell the flowers and live in the moment with my little girl before she starts school.
Win win

I got so distracted by finishing my quilt I forgot to say that I won a giveaway the other day!
The wonderful Sheila at Blue Patch Quilter gave away some lovely items she made - I chose the needlecase because it's useful (I really needed one) and thought it was pretty.
Well today a little package showed up at my door and I was astounded - and not just by the lovely tartan ribbon!! This is not just a needlecase. It's so well made, it has twelve spaces for needles and it has two extra pockets the size of the case (I'm putting my sewing needlecase in there too because I keep losing the little thing!!), and it has such lovely embroidery stitch detail:
It's a huge step up from this:
I just keep opening it and looking at the needles all nicely organised!! I'm so thrilled.
And that's not all, she also included some really cute fabric that I'd like to make a pouch with to store other bits and bobs. I love the text on it and the design is adorable. Totally love. Sheila even thought of including some needles in the case - including ones for jeans! I think I'll have to get making some more denim toys :)
Thank you so much Sheila, I couldn't be happier :) I also visited Burns Cottage about 6 years ago so it's a nice reminder for me. It was a really sunny beautiful day when I went, just like the postcard!
As a coincidence when I was taking my needles out of that atrocious plastic bag I came across this:
HURRAH! I can't drop the feed dogs on my machine, and to be honest just resigned myself to the fact I would have to struggle a bit to do FMQ but this little baby slots right over them :) I'd totally forgotten I had it and just lumped it in with my needles and ignored it. Sheila may have inadvertently made my life easier in more ways than one! Win win!
You could win something too if you check out making rebecca lynne's fun giveaway!
I might just be kicking some FMQ butt now!! Off to practice...
