Blogger's BOM quilt with a little help from my friends
This afternoon I finished hand sewing the binding on the Blogger's BOM quilt, which I will be giving to my sister-in-law as a very late Christmas present! My first finished quilt of 2013.
The sun came out briefly and I managed to get some pictures...
I am really happy with it now it's finished. I had a hard time liking some of the blocks and had no clue how to layout the final quilt.
Originally I was going to do a more traditional layout with sashing. I knew I wanted to put some orange in it because that's her favourite colour but I wasn't sure what would work with the grey/pink/greens of the quilt.
I called on a friend for help! Cindy is fantastic and her shop Fluffy Sheep Quilting offers swatches of fabric so you can actually see the designs and colours for real. She sent me a few strips of different Kona orange shades. That's when I realised it would be too much and wasn't what the quilt needed.
Instead I chose to use big pieces of the fabrics I used in the quilt to make a patchwork. I ended up picking Kona Orange for the binding and Kona Ash for the borders. I used 40wt Aurifil 1104 for the quilting - which Cindy very kindly matched with the Kona Orange perfectly for me!
Huge thank you to Cindy for her outstanding service and I strongly recommend visiting the shop, Fluffy Sheep Quilting. I credit her with how much I now love this quilt.
The orange quilting is the perfect touch and brings the quilt together. I love the modern overall feel it gives too. The quilt is backed in a purple 'jewels' fabric by Lizzy House and measures 54 x 54".

I actually got it finished!! So just the binding to do later tonight hopefully. Thanks to this little cheeky one for having such a good nap today and sleeping through the sound of the machine!

I was doing so well yesterday - got lots of housework done and even basted my Blogger's BOM quilt in the afternoon... by 5pm I was losing my mind and the sleep deprivation totally caught up to me. I went a bit mental and then I was asleep by 8pm. God only knows what I'd do without my husband - he's pure angel!
So I might find some time at some point to get this baby quilted. It isn't basted too well but that's what happens when you're rushing to do it with a baby asleep and 'help' from a cute 3 yr old girl!
I know some of you will tell me I'm crazy for even thinking about sewing but honestly it felt SO good to make some progress and sewing is my 'me' thing. Being a mum always comes first but being 'Lucy' is important too!
I made these Japanese x + o blocks for Sue, our first queen in the Simply Solids Bee, before Lois was born... now just need to get to the post office!
Over the past couple of weeks more feather blocks have been floating in from my lovely bee mates...

Lastly check out my girl with her totally natural (and I can't stop it!!) amazing mohican hair do. I'd literally have to put gel on it to stop it from sticking up!! It has a mind of it's own ;) Super cute though!

I have been pretty productive of late, lots of finishing things up and huge motivation to get things done since I decided just to sew what I love and enjoy - ok I think I'm saying that too much but really it's a revelation and obviously it's the whole point. I just felt overwhelmed by my to do list but when I stopped trying to get it all done in any order or speed it was a weight lifted and it brought the joy back. And yes those baby hormones have a lot to answer for... this is a clear case of sew-nesting people!!

- Vintage Stitchings - After finishing the vintage donkey embroidery last week I decided to sew up another 2. They kind of represent the (nearly) 3 kids and will be hung in the baby's room:

That went well, and I was stitching up the little dog when I realised my mistake:
urm yeah... I forgot the golden rule about transferring patterns and letters being the mirror image. So I did my best to conceal it, at least it still follows the theme:

- Braid Quilt - I've finished all the rows so they need sewing together and a border
- HFWYGQAL - done a bit of cutting in preparation but no blocks sewn yet - I will catch up though!
- Blogger's BOM quilt - I had great plans of sashing this and trying a different but modern layout. Partially because when I started making these blocks (a year ago!) my 1/4" seam was not consistent and so the blocks vary quite a bit in size. I wanted to get it done though and just could not face sashing at all - it's not my favourite thing to do and with a baby bump this size cutting is getting harder and harder - so I took the easy road and hoped for the best...
I cut some squares of the fabrics I'd used in the blocks and made it into a simple random patchwork. It is no where near perfect, I've cut off lots of the points in the blocks but it still works for me. I actually love how it looks all together. So I'm going to add a simple Kona Ash border and get it quilted!
