I used a ruler under the needle to get the 1/4" mark, moved the needle to that point and added it to memory(M). The machine now always start in that needle position! Do try the knee lifter - it is like an extra hand...I miss it when I work on my vintage machines. Not quite as fancy as yours an...I have an Elna too. Not quite as fancy as yours and a few years old now. Oh it used to bug me about having to reset it once I'd turned it off, so frustrating! But then I found in my manual something called "quick resumption mode" and once you've set it, the machine resets to the last stitch setting you used before you turned it off. Maybe yours has this, or something similar, too? On my Juki HZL F600, there are three things I love that came as standard- the electronic buttonholer (for when I make blouses etc), the wide add-on table and the independent motor that winds the bobbin for you!
